Aplared combines a local history that developed around the railway station with recreational opportunities at Ekbacken and connections to the surrounding landscape. This offers different interests to focus on when planning your trip: railway history, outdoor exercise, nature and water. The options also vary depending on whether you want to take a fixed date, a time of day or a seasonal window into account.

Railway station and railway history

Aplared developed around its railway station, which opened to traffic in 1902. A 280-metre-long railway tunnel was also built at Aplared. The station and tunnel highlight different aspects of railway history: the station is connected to the development of the town, while the tunnel adds another structure to the story. If you are interested in local development and transport history, both offer specific points of interest.

Running and other recreational activities

The illuminated running trail at Ekbacken is 1,500 metres long. It is lit from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., except during daylight. Its length gives your run a clear framework; the lighting hours are a separate consideration when planning your day. Ekbacken also has a boules court next to the grass sports field. In the forest by the gravel area, there is a wind shelter with facilities for barbecuing. The options serve different purposes: the running trail offers a clearly defined run, boules provides another way to be active, and the wind shelter offers a place to barbecue.

Nature and water

A nature reserve with Bronze Age clearance cairns lies near Ekbacken. These Bronze Age cairns also make the natural surroundings interesting from a cultural-history perspective. Aplared is also close to several smaller lakes, which offer opportunities for fishing and other water activities.

The swimming pier on Lake Skansasjön is in the vicinity of Aplared and is in the water from mid-May to early September. Unlike the general opportunities for fishing and other water activities, this particular water-related option is seasonal. Keep this time window in mind if the pier is important to your travel plans.

Club activities at set times

On the last Sunday of every month, Aplareds IF hosts a tip-round with a walk and quiz at the clubhouse from 10 a.m. to noon; fika is served there on the same day. In 2026, retired people and others with free time during the day also meet at Aplareds IF on Mondays at 10 a.m. for activities, including walks around the illuminated running trail. Check both schedules before your visit.

Different planning schedules

The activities vary considerably in terms of timing: the running trail has daily lighting hours, the club activities are tied to specific days of the week or a particular day of the month, and the swimming pier is seasonal. This lets you take fixed events, times of day and seasonal access to the water into account as separate planning considerations.
