Gustavsfors lies on the Dalsland Canal, on the border between Dalsland and VÀrmland. Here, the history of locks and industry meets opportunities for days by the water. Gustavsfors lock station is a single-chamber lock and number 23 on the canal: it leads from Lake LelÄngen into VÀstra Silen. Boaters arriving via these lakes can moor at the guest jetty. Road 172 also runs through the village. When choosing accommodation, it is worth first deciding what you want to do: are water activities, walking routes, local history or an event the main priority?

Waterways, fishing and hiking

The location between LelÄngen and VÀstra Silen makes the canal a useful point of reference for a stay in Gustavsfors. The marina has 16 berths, a slipway and six parking spaces for marina guests. Boaters arriving via VÀstra Silen and LelÄngen can moor at the guest jetty. Information about the marina and mooring helps distinguish a boating stay from other interests in the area.

Gustavsfors also has canoe rental and opportunities for fishing. The Dalsland-Nordmarken canoe fishing permit is sold at ICA Optimisten. Gustavsfors bathing area is on LelÄng. The lake is one of the largest in the area and is part of the Dalsland Canal lake system. Canoe rental, fishing and the bathing area are therefore different options for enjoying the water; they are not the same offering and can be planned around your personal interests.

The Vammerviksleden hiking trail can be started in Gustavsfors or Vammerviken. A section of the LelĂ„nge Trail also passes through here: the second stage runs from Gustavsfors to Dals LĂ„nged. Check route details before setting out. Another way to explore the area is by rail trolley, which can be rented in Gustavsfors for use on the disused railway line between Bengtsfors and Kyrkerud (ÅrjĂ€ng). Hiking, a rail-trolley ride and time by the water offer different ways to spend your time, without requiring a particular duration or order.

Industrial history and culture

Gustavsfors has an industrial character, with roots in the 18th century. The Gustavsfors Bruksmuseum covers the history of the mill, the local school and boat traffic on the canal. The Norra Kulturkanalen also begins in the old industrial village of Gustavsfors, at its Bruksmuseum. Those interested in the village’s development can explore its history through the themes of work, education and water transport.

Another part of the village’s history is Gustavsfors Chapel. It was built in 1891 by Kyrkans vĂ€nner, a local association of the Evangeliska fosterlandsstiftelsen, together with the Missionsförsamlingen. The chapel reflects important aspects of Christian activity in the former industrial community. It also houses the Steinton triptych “Vision i smedjan,” created by Olga Aue-Birkfeldt in 1978. The title and the work’s classification as a triptych give it a distinct connection to local history, without replacing the other themes found in the museum and surrounding area.

Folk pÄ VÀnna and planning your stay

In Mossviken, just outside Gustavsfors on the shore of VÀstra Silen, the Folk pÄ VÀnna festival is held annually at VÀnna GÄrd. It brings the American South and Appalachia to North Dalsland. The festival features a food truck, a bar, homemade Southern cooking, a country DJ, cornhole lanes and on-site camping. VÀnna GÄrd also hosts other folk music events. As these are recurring cultural events, check dates and arrangements before your trip.

For practical information in the village, ICA Optimistens Lanthandel is a staffed tourist information point. It offers basic tourist information, brochures and personal service; the canoe fishing permit is also sold at ICA Optimisten. This makes it easy to combine information about a stay by the water with deciding whether the marina, a hike, local history or a festival will shape your visit. Gustavsfors offers distinct points of interest, from the canal and its lakes to its industrial heritage and events in Mossviken.
