The Verleskogen Nature Reserve covers 85 hectares and is located in the northwestern part of Risveden, near Lake Holmevattnet. A stay connected with Verle brings different themes into focus: a nature area with specific directions for getting there, as well as historic buildings and local connections. For an outing in nature, the route matters; for the cultural theme, past uses, construction dates and names provide orientation. This lets you decide before planning whether the landscape or architectural history should be your main focus.

Verleskogen Nature Reserve

Verleskogen’s wilderness character goes hand in hand with gently rolling terrain, making it easy to get around the area. Its wilderness character and terrain offer two different ways to understand the natural environment: one concerns its character, the other how you move through the landscape. If you choose an outing based on the terrain, the gentle hills are one specific point to consider. When planning, you should also treat getting there by bus and on foot as a separate practical consideration.

Getting to the nature reserve by bus and on foot

A municipal set of directions, updated on 4 July 2024, describes taking the bus to the “Verle Östergård” stop. From there, walk back downhill along the road and turn left. Follow the gravel road for about 3.4 kilometres; at the sign for the nature reserve, turn right and reach the area after another 400 metres. So the bus stop is not the end of the journey: after the bus ride, there is a walk along the gravel road and a final stretch to the nature reserve. Before planning, check the current bus timetable and allow for each part of the route when estimating your travel time.

Architectural history and local connections

The main building at the Verle 11:1 farm dates from 1916. Verle 8:1 was the former Verle primary school in Järnklev and was built in 1849. There are 67 years between these construction dates: the school dates to the mid-19th century, while the farm’s main building dates to the early 20th century. This comparison provides two points of reference in time while distinguishing their different functions: the main building of a farm on the one hand, and a former primary school on the other.

Verle 3:19 Östergård is located in the Grönån Valley. At Verle, Kalvhagen is marked with sign 35. These details complement the construction dates with a valley reference and a specific name. If architectural history is your focus, you can first distinguish the buildings by their construction dates and former uses; Östergård and Kalvhagen broaden the selection with local connections.

Nature or architectural history as your main focus?

There are different points to consider when choosing your focus: at Verleskogen, the terrain and a bus ride followed by a walk take centre stage. For architectural history, the dates and the school’s former use are more tangible than directions for a route. If you want to consider both, decide in advance whether the nature outing or exploring the historic buildings should take up more of your time.
