More than 18,000 hectares of mountain wilderness shape Malolotja Nature Reserve in northwestern Eswatini. Alongside landscapes like these, historic sites and exhibitions also offer visitors different ways to explore the country’s history. Nature experiences, activities on the water and culture each add a distinct dimension to your trip.

Mountain Wilderness and Nature Experiences

Malolotja Canopy Tour® is located within Malolotja Nature Reserve. It comprises eleven elevated platforms in the forest, ten ziplines and a 50-metre suspension bridge over the Majolomba River. Check before your trip whether the tour is currently operating.

At Mlawula Nature Reserve, visitors have access to 54 km of road for wildlife viewing. The nature experiences differ in format: Malolotja brings together platforms, ziplines and a suspension bridge in one tour; Mlawula focuses on wildlife viewing from the road. When planning your trip, you can weigh a specific canopy tour against road-based wildlife viewing.

Views and Activities at Maguga Dam

You can stop at various points along Maguga Dam to enjoy the views. Boating and fishing are also possible there. Check before your trip whether these activities will be available. The same location thus offers both an opportunity to pause and enjoy the view and two ways to spend time on the water.

Royal History and Cultural Insights

King Sobhuza II Park in Lobamba is a national monument and was officially opened on 13 May 1994. A domed structure houses an oversized statue of King Sobhuza II and two symbolic lions. The site focuses on a specific person; Eswatini is also one of the few remaining monarchies in Africa.

The exhibitions at the Eswatini National Museum trace the history of the EmaSwati from the Stone Age through the colonial period to independence. The timeline therefore spans several eras, while the statue at King Sobhuza II Park places one king at its centre. Lion Cavern is located at Ngwenya Mine, which is considered the oldest mine in the world. Together, the monument, museum and mine offer different perspectives on history and cultural heritage.

Local transport in Eswatini includes buses and kombis, or shared taxis. For a short stay of two weeks, self-driving can be one way to explore the country. Which option suits your travel plans also depends on how you want to get between the different nature and cultural attractions. Check local connections and road conditions in advance.
