Gardens between conservation and history

The Western Province can be explored through two botanical gardens, each offering a different perspective. The Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens in Avissawella, in Colombo District, was established as Sri Lanka’s first botanical garden devoted exclusively to conserving wet-zone flora. The Henarathgoda Botanic Gardens in Gampaha tells a different story: it was founded in 1876 to introduce rubber to Sri Lanka and is home to plant collections of about 2,000 species from Sri Lanka and other countries. Together, the gardens offer a contrast between the targeted conservation of wet-zone flora and a historic introduction story alongside a diverse plant collection.

Henarathgoda’s cultural heritage is also connected to transport history: the old Henarathgoda Railway Station is preserved as a site of historical archaeological significance. For orientation, the Henarathgoda Botanic Gardens is about 450 metres from Gampaha Railway Station.

Temples, collections and architectural history

In Colombo, the Colombo National Museum was established in 1877 as Sri Lanka’s first national museum. A different kind of collection can be found on the grounds of Gangaramaya Temple, which houses a museum and a library. At Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, religious tradition and art come together. The temple is dedicated to Buddha’s third and final visit to Sri Lanka and features paintings and sculptures by Solias Mendis.

Richmond Castle in Kalutara offers another distinctive historical perspective. It stands on a 42-acre estate on Kalutara-Palatota Road. The Royal Colombo Golf Club adds a sporting connection to the region’s history: founded in 1880, it is Sri Lanka’s oldest golf club. The places and stories described here range from museum and temple history to architecture and sporting history.

Festivals and public spaces

The Kelaniya Duruthu Perahera takes place every year on the January full-moon Poya day. The Gangarama Nawam Maha Perahera is held annually in February. These different months offer a clear indication of when to visit if you want to plan your trip around one of the festivals; check the dates for the relevant year in advance. The Esala procession of Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya offers another cultural highlight. It usually includes drummers, dancers, decorated elephants and trumpeters.

Public green spaces serve a variety of purposes, too. Viharamahadevi Park has a mini zoo and a children’s play area; its Open Air Stadium hosts concerts and public events. Galle Face Green, in turn, has been used for cricket, kite-flying and walks. These details highlight the different ways public spaces are used without reducing them to one type of experience.

Nature and regional highlights

Natural areas include Muthurajawela Marshland, which forms part of a 6,000-hectare reserve. Horagolla Forest Reserve is Sri Lanka’s smallest forest reserve. The two facts offer different points of reference: one reflects the size of a reserve, the other the distinctive scale of a forest reserve. Mangosteen is associated with Kalutara, adding a regional connection to the landscape and historical themes.

The Western Province offers several ways to explore: botanical gardens with different stories, temples and museums, processions and event venues, as well as natural areas. Which discoveries shape your trip depends on whether you are especially interested in plants, cultural heritage, festivals or landscapes.
