At Suncheonman Bay, a three-kilometer waterway winds through extensive tidal flats and reed beds. From the observation deck, you can watch sunsets over the S-shaped waterway. As you explore Jeollanam-Do, you’ll also encounter very different landscapes: a large bamboo forest, a garden with plants for all four seasons, and protected natural sites. These contrasts make the region interesting, without every discovery needing to be the same kind of outing.

Tidal Flats, Reeds and Bamboo

Suncheonman Wetland is home to numerous species, including endangered species. Crested cranes live in the Boseong-Suncheon Tidal Flat, which is also home to colonies of halophytes. Suncheonman National Garden offers a different focus: it showcases the beauty of a variety of plants throughout all four seasons. Gwanbangjerim Forest is also designated a natural monument.

Juknokwon, located in Damyang, is a bamboo forest of about 160,000 square meters established by Damyang. Eight themed walking trails offer different points of interest for a stroll. The scale of the forest and its themed trails give the place a different character from the open tidal flats of Suncheonman Bay. If you are planning a visit, check the local operating conditions for the trails.

Places of History and Cultural Heritage

Unjusa is protected as a state-designated historic site and includes three state-designated cultural treasures. Houses and ways of life from the past have been preserved in Naganeupseong Walled Town. Seomjingang Train Village offers a different historical connection: Gokseong’s former station building, dating from 1933, is listed as national registered cultural heritage. The Train Village also offers rail-bike rides; check the latest operating details before visiting.

A glimpse of local heritage can also come through specific materials and crafts. Taepyung Salt Farm produces clean, sun-dried salt from pure, mineral-rich seawater. Taepyung Salt Farm Maritime Healing Spa offers a Salt Cave Healing Room and Mineral Floating Therapy; for planning, check the latest operating details in advance. Cypress Salt House is a thermal healing facility that uses cypress wood and sun-dried salt. It is also advisable to check current operations for this offering.

Festivals, Tea and Seasonal Experiences

The Gwangyang Plum Blossom Festival is held annually in Gwangyang Maehwa Village. Anjwa Island hosts a lavender festival every spring. As the exact event dates are not set, be sure to check the dates separately for your trip.

The Boseong Green Tea Festival brings together several steps in the tea-making process: the program includes picking tea leaves, making tea, creating and enjoying personalized tea blends, and green tea therapy. The program focuses not only on the finished drink, but also on processing and creating your own blends. Check the dates and program for the relevant year before visiting.

Islands, Views and Discoveries

The Mokpo Marine Cable Car is 3.23 kilometers long. It offers views of the Dadohae Archipelago, sunsets and the Mokpodaegyo Bridge at night. If you are planning a ride, check operating details in advance. Another distinctive connection is the Purple Bridge, which links Duri with the islands of Bakjido and Banwoldo.

The 1004 Islands Museum Park is located at Yangsan Beach on Jaeundo Island. The World Shell Museum displays shells and marine life collected from seas around the world. Those more interested in technology and science can find exhibits and information about space technology at the Naro Space Center. These places offer different ways to explore the region—from marine life and island connections to space travel.
