A poem from the Baekje period, maple-lined tunnel paths and tea served with traditional desserts offer different ways to discover Jeongeup-si. There are also trekking routes on Naejangsan and a railway station associated with visits to see the autumn foliage. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the main central attractions, places in the townships and the natural attraction of Naejangsan.

Cultural Heritage Between Poetry and History

At the heart of Jeongeup-si is Jeongeupsa Culture Park. It was established in honor of “Jeongeupsa,” a Baekje-Gayo poem from the Baekje period. Of the five Baekje-Gayo poems handed down in Hangeul, Jeongeupsa is the only one that has survived to this day. The park gives this literary tradition a tangible connection to the city center.

The Donghak Peasant Revolution National Memorial Park in Deokcheon-myeon offers a different perspective on history. It is located on the Hwangtohyeon battlefield, where the Donghak Peasant Army won its first victory over government troops. The two sites thus represent different chapters: poetry at the culture park in the center, and revolutionary history on the named battlefield.

Flowers and Maples in Jeongeup-si

The Jeongeup Gujeolcho Local Garden is located in Sannae-myeon. It features extensive plantings of gujeolcho and other wildflowers, and was designated Jeonbuk’s first Local Garden. Near Jaejangho Lake in Jeongeup is Naejangsan Maple Ecology Park. Eleven native maple species grow there; the park also includes various gardens, maple-lined tunnel paths and the Maple Experience Exhibition Center. The two parks offer different highlights: gujeolcho and other wildflowers at one, native maple species and their gardens at the other.

Another attraction in Jeongeup-si is the Naejangsan Cultural Tourism Musical Fountain in Naejangsan Water Park. Its program includes more than 110 songs, including children’s songs, pop hits and film music. The program may change; check the current performance schedule before your visit.

Naejangsan: Trails, Views and Autumn Colors

Naejangsan Mountain is about 11 kilometers from the center of Jeongeup and has more than ten trekking routes ranging from 1.5 to 14 kilometers long. These route lengths give you a concrete point of comparison when planning the scope of an outing. Conditions on individual routes may change, so it is a good idea to check for current information before setting out.

The Naejangsan Cable Car offers views across the entire park. From its upper station, a 300-meter walking path leads to the observatory on Yeonjabong Peak. This lets you consider trekking routes and the cable car followed by a walk as different options for your outing. Operating conditions may change, so check on the cable car in advance.

In autumn, Jeongeup Station is especially well known because many hikers visit Naejangsan from there to see the vivid fall foliage. Jeongeup is also an important stop on the Honam Line. Check current train schedules before your trip.

Ssanghwacha and Jeongeup Ssanghwacha Street

The city lists Jeongeup Ssanghwacha as the first of its three culinary specialties. Jeongeup Ssanghwacha Street is in central Jeongeup. Cafés there typically serve traditional Korean desserts such as garaetteok and nurungji with herbal tea; individual cafés’ selections may vary. Tea and accompanying snacks offer a distinct culinary highlight alongside the cultural and botanical attractions.
