Tongyeong-Si showcases culture in many forms: Dongpirang’s murals, DPIRANG’s illuminated themed paths and the historic underwater tunnel each offer a distinctive experience. The landscape around Mireuksan and maritime activities reveal another side of the area.

Murals and Digital Culture

In the hillside village of Dongpirang, the walls were painted with murals in 2007, revitalizing it as an arts-focused hillside village. From Dongpirang, you can look out over the sea and Gangguan Harbor. A digital display board at Gangguan presents Tongyeong’s culture in 3D.

DPIRANG, a digital theme park in Nammangsan Park, features 15 illuminated paths with different themes, covering a total distance of 1.3 kilometers. Its media show tells the story of murals that disappeared from Dongpirang and Seopirang, bringing them back to life. In this way, the show reimagines the mural theme digitally. The installations can be updated.

Underwater Tunnel and Landscape

Another cultural landmark is the Tongyeong Underwater Tunnel: it is Asia’s first underwater tunnel and measures 483 meters long and 5 meters wide. Its precise dimensions, alongside the more visually oriented cultural themes of Dongpirang and DPIRANG, offer a different perspective on the area’s cultural heritage.

Mireuksan is known for its lush forests, valleys with clear water, unusually shaped rocks and rock caves. Its well-maintained trails are suitable for short hikes. From Mireuksan, you can enjoy views of the Korean archipelago; visibility depends on the weather. The mountain’s natural features are complemented by views whose clarity can vary.

Mireukdo Island is part of Hallyeohaesang National Park. The Mireukdo Special Tourism Zone offers yacht services and water sports such as windsurfing, kayaking and water skiing. For a different kind of activity, consider the Tongyeong Cable Car: it is 1,975 meters long, and visitors are allowed to bring their pets. Check the pet policy before traveling; operating conditions may also change.

Festival and Cuisine

The Tongyeong Hansan Battle Festival includes a reenactment of the Battle of Hansan, traditional cultural experiences for visitors of all ages, and maritime recreational sports activities. The festival program may change from one edition to the next. Before making plans, check the dates and events for the relevant edition.

In Tongyeong-Si, Yonggung Ttukbaegi serves a variety of seafood stews. The restaurant uses only selected fresh seafood and prepares the stews to order to preserve the ingredients’ natural flavors. The menu and operating details may change; check the current offerings before your visit.
