In the historic centre of Beaufort West, you will encounter early buildings featuring a wide variety of architectural styles. A self-guided walk takes you to the historic buildings; at the museum and Mission Church, exhibitions tell the stories of the town’s people and communities. Nearby, you can also visit Karoo National Park and the rock art site near Nelspoort. This gives you the choice of exploring built heritage, specific local history or themes from the wider Karoo region.

Architecture in the historic centre

The buildings on view feature Victorian, Georgian, Edwardian, eclectic, Romanesque, Cape Dutch, Neo-Gothic, Neoclassical and contemporary elements. The self-guided walk takes you to the historic buildings, providing a specific focus for your stay. As you explore, you can compare the different styles rather than assume the town has a single architectural character. The range encompasses both historic influences and contemporary elements; its appeal lies in this variety, not in a uniform stylistic classification.

Typical Karoo houses have been preserved in Beaufort West. They add a distinct aspect of built heritage to the architectural diversity. This lets you view the different styles in the historic centre and the characteristic Karoo houses as two perspectives on the town’s architecture.

Beaufort West and the fossil history of the Karoo

The fossil history extends beyond Beaufort West into the wider Great Karoo region. In 1827, David Baird found the first reptile fossil near the then border town of Beaufort. The town was renamed Beaufort West in 1869. The area where the town stood became one of the world’s most significant sites for such fossil finds. This sequence links the town’s earlier name with its later name change and the region’s importance for fossil discoveries. It gives the destination’s history a regional dimension that reaches beyond the buildings in the historic centre.

Exhibitions and remembrance

The old town hall is now part of the Beaufort West Museum and houses an exhibition of awards presented to Professor Chris Barnard. In 1967, Barnard performed the world’s first heart transplant. The exhibition thus connects a site of local history with the biography of a doctor and the event for which he received recognition.

The Mission Church offers a different historical perspective. It features a permanent exhibition of personal memories of the Dutch Reformed Mission Church community in Beaufort West, up to its forced relocation to a residential area for People of Colour in the late 1960s. The exhibition focuses on both the community and the forced change to its place of residence. Together with the display of Barnard’s awards, it offers a comparison between two different places of remembrance: one centres on the history of a community, the other on a person and his awards.

Karoo National Park and rock art in the surrounding area

Karoo National Park lies on the outskirts of Beaufort West and covers 75,000 ha. This makes the landscape one of the clearly defined attractions in the nearby area. Near Nelspoort, a rock art site spans a large area and includes hundreds of engravings. It offers a different focus: rock art rather than architecture or an expanse of landscape. The attractions in the surrounding area therefore differ both in what they feature and in how their locations are described.

For your travel planning, Beaufort West can be viewed from several perspectives: the buildings, the old town hall and Mission Church reflect the town’s history; the national park on the outskirts and the rock art site near Nelspoort broaden the view to the region. Depending on whether your particular interest is architecture, exhibitions, fossil history, landscape or rock art, a different one of these themes will take centre stage.
