Riemvasmaak combines the Hot Springs with a striking rock landscape. Three 4×4 routes, a mountain biking route and birdwatching add to its nature-related attractions. South of the main settlement, a gorge and a rock art site offer further points of interest related to the landscape and culture. This lets you explore the area from different angles rather than reducing Riemvasmaak to just its springs.

Hot Springs between Rock and Geological History

Rock walls surround the Riemvasmaak Hot Springs and rise 80 metres above them. Two swimming pools have been built at the springs. The Hot Springs were formed by volcanic eruptions that ended long ago; deep underground activity continues to warm their water. These details offer two perspectives on the same place: the spatial relationship between the rock walls and the springs, and the sequence of past volcanism followed by continued warming. The swimming pools add a constructed feature to the natural formation. Geological processes and a built element therefore sit side by side, without equating the pools with the origin of the springs.

4×4, Mountain Biking and Birdwatching

There are three routes across sandy and rocky terrain for 4×4 driving. A mountain biking route also runs through sandy and rocky terrain. The direct comparison involves two criteria: the number of routes and the type of activity. Sand and rock are the common terrain. When weighing up the options, you can first compare motorised driving with the cycling route; the shared terrain then helps you consider the details together.

Birdwatching offers a different focus from the routes. Black Eagle and Namaqua Dove are the main species of interest, and a bird list is also available. The focus thus shifts from the terrain to specific bird species. If you are interested in birdwatching, you can use the two names as a guide and consult the bird list.

Gorge and Rock Art South of the Main Settlement

South of Riemvasmaak’s main settlement, the seasonal Molopo River has cut a 100-metre-deep gorge into brick-red granite. Compared with the Hot Springs, this shows a different connection with water: the river is seasonal, while deep underground activity continues to warm the spring water. The nearby seasonal river landscape and the continued warming of the springs thus represent different natural processes. Also south of the main settlement, along a rewarding 4×4 route, is a rock art site featuring depictions of the San and Khoekhoen. The rock art site links its location along the route with a cultural theme. The gorge and the rock art offer different points of interest in the southern area: a granite landscape and cultural depictions.
