Near Masisi is the Sagole Baobab, also known as the Sagole Big Tree. It is considered the largest baobab in South Africa and possibly one of the largest trees in the world. Sagole Baobab and Sagole Big Tree refer to the same tree, so both names lead to the same natural attraction. This makes the tree a specific nature highlight for a stay in the Masisi area.

Baobab and birdwatching

The Mottled Spinetail is especially easy to spot at the Sagole Big Tree in the late evening and early morning. These two time windows provide a practical framework for planning your day: you can decide which time suits your trip better. If you specifically want to see the Mottled Spinetail, factor in the time window from the outset; if the tree itself is your main focus, birdwatching can be an additional option. Since bird sightings can vary, a sighting is not guaranteed.

Getting there and visiting

From the R525, follow the signs to Sagole Spa (Tshipise) to reach the Sagole Big Tree. A gravel road was built to provide access, and a fence was erected around the tree. Sagole Spa (Tshipise) is therefore the signposted reference point, while the Sagole Big Tree is the destination. Road conditions and signs can change, so check the current route before setting out. An admission fee is required to visit; also check the current terms in advance. The route and fees are two separate planning points: one concerns access, the other the visit itself.

Staff at Pafuri River Camp can also take visitors to the Sagole Big Tree if arranged in advance. If you would like to use this option, arrange the trip with the camp before your journey and check its availability. Unlike navigating from the R525, this transport is based on an individual arrangement. If you would like to combine the trip with a visit in the early morning or late evening, check whether it can be arranged for your preferred time window.

Accommodation near the tree

Some of the closest accommodation options to the Sagole Big Tree are Gundani Mutsiwa Campsite and Pafuri River Camp. If proximity to the tree matters when choosing where to stay, these two names are useful starting points for your search. Accommodation options can change; check availability for your travel dates before planning your stay around them. Pafuri River Camp is also relevant to two aspects of your planning: it is one of the closest accommodation options, and its staff can take visitors to the tree by prior arrangement. If you are considering both an overnight stay and this trip, check availability and make the transport arrangements separately.
