Vereeniging has a clear historical focus: a negotiation site, cemetery, cenotaph and Peace Monument represent different forms of remembrance. Alongside these, the Vaal Marina Route leads from Vereeniging to the Vaal Marina holiday village. Local history and the route connection are therefore two distinct points of focus for travel planning.
Negotiations and Places of Remembrance
On 15 May 1902, 60 delegates from the Boer republics and 60 delegates from Great Britain met at Vereeniging Brick and Tile, now Verref. The peace negotiations at Vereeniging Brick and Tile took place beneath a tree stump that is considered a heritage site. The date, the number of delegates and the tree stump connect the historic meeting with a specifically named location.
A monument at the peace negotiation site at Verref cricket pitch was officially opened on 31 May 1992 by former president F. W. de Klerk. The Peace Monument was unveiled in Vereeniging in 1961 in honour of the courage of the Boers during the war. It was designed and created by Coert Steynberg.
The Vereeniging Concentration Camp Cemetery is also Vereeniging’s old cemetery. Women and children who had been held in concentration camps during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 to 1902 were buried there. A cenotaph in the cemetery bears the names and ages of the women and children from the Vereeniging Concentration Camp. The historical connections are therefore distinct: the focus here is on those buried there and their commemoration by name, rather than on negotiations between delegations.
The Vaal Teknorama Museum also has a historical connection to its location: it stands where Top Location once was. This adds another connection to the town’s past alongside the places of remembrance.
Civic Landmarks and Surroundings
Constitution Square is part of Vereeniging’s Civic Centre. A municipal planning document from 2013/14 lists the main office of the Sedibeng District Municipality, City and Banquet Halls, a Civic Theatre and a library there. The square broadens the view from individual places of remembrance to a civic landmark; the facilities listed are those associated with the 2013/14 planning document.
In the surrounding area, in the Meyerton region, lies the Witkop Blockhouse. It is one of approximately 50 blockhouses still standing in the country. This adds a distinct regional connection: Meyerton and the group of blockhouses preserved across the country can be considered a complement to Vereeniging’s local history.
For a different focus, the Vaal Marina Route leads from Vereeniging to the Vaal Marina holiday village. Its named destination distinguishes it from the historic sites located within the town. If you include this route in your plans, it is worth checking current road conditions before setting out.
