Rosebank brings together art and design, markets, restaurants and a wide range of shopping. When planning, it helps to distinguish between these different draws: interactive installations, galleries and design shops offer a different kind of visit from a market or shopping centre. Rosebank is considered easy to explore on foot, although how well a particular route works depends on the distance and conditions.

Art and design

At the Museum of Illusions Johannesburg, visitors can experience interactive installations as part of a pre-booked tour or explore at their own pace. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

19 Keyes on Keyes Art Mile features curated art galleries and design shops, making art and design the focus here. Individual venues and their opening hours may change; check the latest information before planning a specific visit.

In the area around Rosebank, the stretch of Jan Smuts Avenue between Rosebank and Parkwood is known as “Art Gallery Row”.

Markets with different offerings

The Rosebank Sunday Market takes place on Sundays on the roof of Rosebank Mall. It features live entertainment and stalls selling food, crafts, clothing and vintage items. If you’re planning to visit the market, check in advance whether it is currently taking place.

The Rosebank Art & Craft Market offers South African crafts and souvenirs. These include beadwork, jewellery, West African masks, traditional fabrics, carved Big Five figures, as well as magnets, key rings and T-shirts. The selection may vary.

Shopping and dining

Rosebank has three connected shopping centres with just under 200 shops altogether. This gives you a choice of larger shopping options as well as the design shops at 19 Keyes. The exact number of shops may change.

Restaurants in Rosebank include Marble, Soul Souvlaki and Momo Kuro. Marble is considered a fine-dining restaurant, while Soul Souvlaki and Momo Kuro are considered casual eateries. As restaurants and their operations may change, check current opening hours before planning a specific visit.

In the wider destination of City Of Johannesburg

The Apartheid Museum illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid. Its permanent exhibition traces South Africa’s history from the dark days of oppression to a place of healing shaped by democratic principles. Constitution Hill is home to South Africa’s Constitutional Court and, as a living museum, tells the story of South Africa’s journey to democracy.

The Origins Centre is dedicated through its interactive exhibitions to the origins of humanity in Africa and the development of technology, art, culture and symbolism. It also explores South Africa’s diverse rock art traditions.

Green spaces and waterside activities are also part of the wider City Of Johannesburg area: Johannesburg Botanical Garden is an 81-hectare green space used by runners, picnickers and dog owners. The dam in Johannesburg Botanical Gardens offers opportunities for canoeing and sailing; facilities belonging to a diving club are located on its eastern shore.
