Shell-rich beaches, powerful waves and a nature reserve in the heart of town give Jeffrey's Bay several different sides. When planning your stay, you can choose between time at the beach, a look at local coastal culture and a walk in the Noorsekloof Nature Reserve. The places and activities offer different points of focus, without requiring a set itinerary.

Beach and Surfing: Shells, Fishing and Waves

The beaches of Jeffrey's Bay are rich in shells and known for good fishing. This makes the stretch of coast appealing to people with different interests: you can take an interest in the shells on the beach or factor the fishing opportunities into your plans. This does not refer to any particular fishing spot or equipment.

The Wavecrest Surf School offers two-hour surf lessons. A surfboard and wetsuit are included for shared use. If you plan a lesson, confirm current availability directly with the provider.

Super Tubes represents another side of surfing: the waves there can be around 10 to 12 feet high and very fast. The swell usually picks up during the winter months; however, conditions vary, and this seasonal information is not a forecast for any specific visit date. This distinguishes a planned two-hour lesson from the seasonal swell at Super Tubes, without treating them as the same experience.

A Nature Area in the Centre

Noorsekloof Nature Reserve is in the centre of Jeffrey's Bay. The small nature reserve covers 28 hectares and stretches from the beaches up the valley slope through Wavecrest. Its landscape is characterised by valley bushveld, and it is home to more than 50 bird species. The reserve was declared a nature reserve in 1984.

A walk along a trail of about three kilometres is one option. It is mostly flat, but also has some more challenging sections over uneven terrain. The mix of gentler and more demanding terrain is more useful for planning than the distance alone. As surface conditions can change, check the trail conditions before your walk.

This sets the nature area apart from beach and surfing interests: Noorsekloof is about valley bushveld, bird species and a walking trail. Its location in the town centre and its stretch through Wavecrest provide two distinct geographical reference points; the walking trail should not be equated with the reserve's entire area.

Shells, the Sea and the Museum

The Jeffreys Bay Shell Museum is in the centre, opposite the main beach and close to restaurants and shops. Its glass display cases showcase thousands of shells from around the world. Its location gives a museum visit a clear sense of place: the museum is opposite the main beach, with restaurants and shops nearby.

The exhibitions cover marine phenomena such as red tide, as well as whales and sharks. They also explore the culinary and economic importance of chokka, also known as “Gold of the Sea.” The museum brings together nature and food-related topics, while the beaches and nature reserve each offer their own ways to engage with the area's landscape.

Arts and crafts are also part of the local character: Jeffrey's Bay is home to a thriving arts and crafts industry. Together with the museum's themes and the importance of chokka, this offers a cultural and economic perspective on the town that goes beyond beaches and waves.
