Two different hiking destinations lie near Clarendon Marine: the Sacramento Trail through the Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve and trails in the Island Nature Reserve. The wider destination of Nelson Mandela Bay also offers coast, art, history and wildlife viewing. You can first decide whether hiking or regional culture and nature are to be the focus of your trip.

Hiking trails nearby

The approximately 8 km Sacramento Trail runs through the 320 ha Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve, which was proclaimed in 1980. The hike begins at the western end of Schoenmakerskop and follows the coast to Sardinia Bay. The return route follows bridle paths and a trail along vegetated dunes. The trail therefore combines coastal sections and dune scenery in one hike. It is suitable for people with a reasonable level of fitness. It is recommended that you hike in groups and bring sturdy footwear, a sun hat and drinking water.

The Island Nature Reserve in Seaview offers numerous hiking trails, including the 16 km Bushbuck Hiking Trail. There are also picnic areas and a braai area. Comparing the two routes mentioned, the difference in length is clear: the Sacramento Trail is about half as long as the Bushbuck Hiking Trail. The conditions described also differ: the focus for the Sacramento Trail is on the route and hiking recommendations, while the Island Nature Reserve is also noted for its picnic and braai facilities.

Nelson Mandela Bay: Coast, Art and History

In the wider destination of Nelson Mandela Bay, Algoa Bay, the coastal region, offers 40 kilometres of beaches. Route 67 adds a cultural dimension: it consists of 67 public artworks that symbolise Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of service to South Africa’s struggle for freedom. Guided tours are available from the Donkin Visitor Information Office in the lighthouse building. Check what is currently on offer before your visit.

Donkin Reserve offers views of Gqeberha, the harbour and Algoa Bay. The Drostdy Museum in Uitenhage explores a different subject: it documents the historical development of the town and surrounding districts. Its collections include toys, porcelain and clothing; the museum also houses an archival library. You will find it at 50 Caledon Street in Uitenhage.

Route 67 and the Drostdy Museum offer different cultural perspectives: the public artworks represent a symbolic engagement with Mandela’s service to the struggle for freedom, while the museum focuses on regional history and its collections. This makes public art and a museum visit distinct areas of interest.

Nature and Wildlife Viewing

Kragga Kamma Game Park encompasses coastal forests and grassland. Its wildlife includes white rhinos, lions, buffalo, cheetahs, giraffes and zebras; individual sightings are not guaranteed. For wildlife viewing, there are guided game drives and the option to observe animals on your own. This nature experience differs from the hiking trails: here, wildlife viewing and the park landscape are the focus, while the trails themselves provide the setting for the activity at Sacramento Trail and Island Nature Reserve.

For trip planning, these offer different points to consider: route length and layout for hiking, art and historical collections for cultural interests, and a game drive or independent wildlife viewing in the game park. Some of these attractions are near Clarendon Marine, while others are in the wider destination of Nelson Mandela Bay.
