Zagorje ob Savi reveals itself through its mining history and the cultural traces it left behind. A museum is dedicated to the history of mining in the Zagorje Valley; there is also a multimedia memorial room, music and photography offerings, and trails through the town and its surroundings. When planning your visit, it is worth considering these different aspects of the town separately: some stops tell the story of local history, while others lead to art, leisure and outdoor activities.

Mining History and Personal Places of Remembrance

The Zagorje Mining Museum first opened its doors on 17 November 1995. The occasion was a commemoration of 240 years of mining in the Zagorje Valley. Its collection includes photographs, tools, rocks and equipment used by miners. The museum is designed to be interactive and can be explored independently using a smartphone. Alongside historical objects, it therefore places different ways of interpreting the past at the centre of the experience.

The Ladko Korošec memorial room in the Weinberger House offers a different perspective. This multimedia room focuses on Korošec’s image and his distinctive voice. The site also preserves a biographical memory: when Korošec returned to Zagorje, he played his recordings to friends at the Weinberger House for the first time. The museum and memorial room thus offer different points of focus—one on mining history, the other on the memory of an individual and his voice.

Photography, Music and Events

The f 2.8 Photo Gallery was established in August 2020 next to the former miners’ bathhouse, “Vašhava.” Its exhibition space focuses on selected photographers from Zasavje and outstanding artists from across Slovenia. Since exhibitions may change, check the current programme if you are planning a visit to the gallery.

Music and choral singing are also part of the cultural offering. The Slovenian Flute Festival was first held in Zagorje ob Savi in 1996 and takes place every two years. Its programme includes concerts, masterclasses, public lessons and workshops, as well as panel discussions, project presentations and exhibitions of flutes, sheet music and musical accessories. Revija Zagorje ob Savi is a competition for children’s and youth choirs that has been held every two years since 1968. If one of these events is central to your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Art in the Town Centre

Dr. Janez Drnovšek Park is in the town centre, next to the regional road through Zagorje. Its features include a bronze bust of Dr. Janez Drnovšek, a sign indicating the 15th meridian and the sculpture “Turn of the Century” (“Prelom stoletja”). A visit to the park thus brings together several public artworks and points of reference in one place.

A fountain featuring a bronze fibula offers another glimpse into local history: it displays a replica of a Hallstatt-period belt buckle. The original was found in Zagorje at the end of the 19th century. The fibula thus reaches back to a much earlier past than the mining and cultural histories represented at other sites in the town.

Trails, Cycling and Recreation

For a challenging walk, the approximately 5.4-kilometre Iskranjca trail runs from Zagorje railway station to the pond in Zagorje. The Rudarska pot SreÄŤno offers a different focus: it is suitable for walking, recreation and relaxation, as well as visiting natural and cultural sights, with a focus on the technical heritage of mining. The Pot SreÄŤno begins in Zagorje ob Savi; 4.9 kilometres of the route run within the municipality. These details describe different aspects of the trails and should not be combined into a single route.

Cyclists also have several options. The Cilenca Mountain Bike Park offers four trails: Forest Bump (Flow), Jumanji, Super Mario and French Connection. Evropark, meanwhile, is a sports and recreation park created by restoring the former Ruardi site for slag and mining waste. It has walking paths, a cycle path and two connected flow-through ponds. If you are planning a specific outing, check the latest route information and trail markings.

Another activity, “Totalna panika,” is a city adventure that takes participants from point to point through Zagorje ob Savi and includes tasks. You can choose between an activity in an urban setting, a route focused on mining heritage, and options for walking or cycling.

Seasonal Highlights and Practical Information

Japanese cherry trees bloom in Zagorje ob Savi in spring. They grow in two rows: beside the medical centre and between the bypass and Medija. The blossoms last only a short time, so timing your trip is essential if you want to experience this seasonal highlight.

The Zagorje ob Savi municipality tourism portal brings together traditional events and walking and cycling routes for visitors. Since listings may change, check the information close to your travel date. The Zagorje ob Savi Tourist Information Centre is located at Cesta 9. avgusta 5, 1410 Zagorje ob Savi. As the visitor service’s location may change, confirm the address before visiting.
