The municipality of Videm lies on the southern edge of the Dravsko polje, where the Haloze hills come particularly close to the river branches of the Dravinja. It stretches along the Dravinja to the main transport route between Maribor and Zagreb. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether you are visiting Videm mainly for its landscapes, walking and cycling trails, churches or wine culture.
River Landscapes and Nature in Šturmovci
Šturmovci Landscape Park covers 125 hectares and lies on the edge of Videm, between the Drava and the Dravinja. Its habitats include gravel areas, shallow waters and cut-off river bends, as well as spring-fed meadows, flooded forests and meadows. Both river and water areas and vegetated wetlands therefore shape this natural environment.
The Drava Natura 2000 Šturmovec nature trail passes through riparian forests, a cultural landscape, overgrown forests and across gravel banks. Six interpretation points focus on species-rich meadows. A covered viewpoint on the Šturmovec nature trail offers an opportunity to observe birds, butterflies and small mammals. Check local access to the nature trail before your visit.
Walking and Cycling Routes
The Videmska planinska pot is an easy, 25-kilometre hiking trail. It passes through Šturmovci before reaching Videm pri Ptuju. Some details about the route may be outdated, so check the route before setting out on a hike.
The Drava Double Loop cycling route offers another perspective on Šturmovci and runs through the landscape park. Check the route warnings before setting off. The Vineyard Trail starts in the settlement of Videm pri Ptuju; part of its route follows the long-distance hiking trail E7. The length and difficulty rating are given for the Videmska planinska pot, while the Vineyard Trail’s starting point and shared section with the E7 provide guidance. These trails are different planning options and should not be combined into a single route.
Churches and History
The parish church of St Vitus in the centre of Videm has medieval origins and was first mentioned in 1320. Its architecture features Renaissance and Baroque elements. The building comprises a nave with two chapels, a three-sided apse and a bell tower. The church complex also includes a former tower, a medieval rectory, a chaplaincy and a house around the parish church. The church houses relics of Saint Donatus, which the people of Videm received from Rome in 1750.
In Dravinjski Vrh, on the right bank of the Dravinja, stands a Romanesque church dedicated to John the Baptist. It is considered one of the oldest churches in Slovenia. Together with the parish church of St Vitus, it shows two distinct historical aspects of the region: the architecture and church complex in the centre of Videm, and a Romanesque church on the banks of the Dravinja.
Tradition, Crafts and Wine from Haloze
The Tržec Djočanova domačija ethnographic museum preserves the Zbirka haloškega roba collection. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. Members of the association demonstrate traditional agricultural activities there, including weaving fishing nets and baskets; demonstrations depend on the local programme. At Djočanova domačija, spaces can be used for picnics, gatherings or educational workshops. Raft trips on the Dravinja are also available. Activities and events may vary by arrangement.
Vidova klet is a sales and promotional centre for winegrowers from the Haloze wine-growing region. More than 25 bottled wines from 15 Haloze winegrowers are presented there; the selection may change. Guided wine tastings should be arranged in advance, and visits to Vidova klet are also by prior arrangement. This makes it possible to plan cultural discoveries, regional wine offerings and nature trails as different focuses for your stay in Videm.
