In the center of the village of Gorenje stands the branch church of St. John the Baptist. Its building history, the activities of the Gorenje cultural association and the route themes offer different cultural and active ways to plan a trip. The following sections help you distinguish between church architecture, community life, cycling and a longer hike.
Church Architecture Spanning Several Periods
The branch church of St. John the Baptist is Baroque and has a Late Gothic foundation. It was probably built in the late Middle Ages as a Romanesque baptistery. The church chapel was expanded between 1660 and 1730. The chancel dates from the second half of the 18th century. For culturally minded travelers, the special interest lies in the coexistence of these phases: a presumed Romanesque baptistery as its origin, a Late Gothic foundation and Baroque design. Those interested in architecture can therefore place the church in the context of several periods rather than attributing it to just one style.
A Route on Foot or by Bike
The “Pot kulturne in naravne dediščine” is 7 kilometers long and passes through relatively easy terrain. It can be explored on foot or by bicycle. A guided tour can be arranged with the Šmartno ob Paki Tourist Association. If you plan this option, confirm the arrangement before you arrive.
The “Pot spominov” Memorial Route
The “Pot spominov” memorial route passes through Gorenje and is about 18 kilometers long. At a moderate walking pace, it can be completed in five hours. Compared with the 7-kilometer route, it is considerably longer; at the same time, a specific walking time is given for a moderate pace. This makes it possible to consider the longer hike differently from an outing where cycling is also an option.
Remembrance and Community Life
A memorial marker to Stanko Zager stands in the Gorenje–Šmartno ob Paki cemetery. It bears the inscription “ZAGERJEVI”; Stanko Zager was killed on July 4, 1944. The memorial marker adds a distinct connection to remembrance culture alongside the building history and the association’s activities.
Every year, the Gorenje Cultural Association organizes the “Potepanje po okolici” cycling tour and the Mother’s Day event “V pričakovanju pomladi.” The association also revives old customs and traditions every year with the arrival of Santa Claus and the giving of gifts to children. Dates may change; check event dates before your trip if you would like to plan your stay around one of these activities.
A report dated November 8, 2024, mentions a children’s group as well as the adult theater group of the Gorenje Cultural Association. The children’s group’s first performance, “Srote,” received a Gold Award at a national gathering of children’s theater groups. This adds a dated glimpse into the association’s theater work to its events and preservation of customs.
Regional Addition: Šmartno ob Paki
In Šmartno ob Paki, a guided cycling tour through the vineyards can end with a wine tasting at Primožič Winery, at the highest point of Mali vrh, where a good wine can be sampled. Confirm availability and booking arrangements before your trip.
