Get to know Slovenska Bistrica through two distinct sides: its architectural history and the trails in the Pohorje landscape. The Bistriška pot connects specific stops, from Bistrica Castle via the Bistriški Vintgar to the Three Kings; churches and a farmhouse tell stories of other centuries. This lets you decide how much to focus on culture and outdoor activities on your trip.

Discover architecture and history

Bistrica Castle preserves frescoes by Franz Ignaz Flurer, created between 1717 and 1721. The town tower of Slovenska Bistrica was built around 1300 as the southwestern tower of the town wall and restored between 1999 and 2004. The castle park is also part of the town’s natural heritage and is one of its most important natural heritage sites.

The Church of St. Martin in Šmartno na Pohorju is a well-preserved, single-nave Romanesque building with an eastern bell tower. Its chancel frescoes are among the oldest and best-preserved examples of the wall painting of their time. The earliest paintings are dated to around 1220–1230; later wall and vault paintings date from the third quarter of the 13th century. The church is protected as a cultural monument of the municipality.

Other religious buildings offer their own points of interest: the Church of the Three Kings in Planina pod Ĺ umikom is a three-nave church in the Gothic-Renaissance style, dating from the early 16th century. It contains three Baroque altars by Mihael PogaÄŤnik. The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Veliko Tinje features a Late Gothic fresco of St. Christopher and built-in stones from Roman times.

Marovt-Domačija also offers a glimpse of Pohorje’s architectural history: it is a characteristic, originally preserved home of a small-scale Pohorje farmer. A year, 1812, carved into a ceiling beam indicates that the house was built in the early 19th century.

Trails and landscape in the Pohorje

Bistriški Vintgar is a narrow valley of the Bistrica stream in the Pohorje. The walking path there starts in Zgornja Bistrica. The Bistriška pot leads from the Baroque castle through the gorge and onwards to the Three Kings. It is equipped with information boards and features for recreation and learning, connecting several named stops along one route.

One distinctive natural feature is Šum Waterfall, which plunges 13 metres over eroded tonalite. Ančnikovo gradišče is the remains of a late antique fortification from the 4th century; information boards tell its story there. At Črno jezero, the lake and forest nature trail are the main attractions: Črno jezero is the largest lake in the Pohorje, and the trail has six stopping points.

The route from Trije Kralji to Črno jezero is listed as 3.98 kilometres and rated easy. This distinguishes it in the description from the Bistriška pot, which connects several stops. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Cycling is also available: the Pohorje 6A cycling route starts in the centre of Slovenska Bistrica and runs through the municipality.

Market, regional cuisine and finding a place to stay

The Grajska trĹľnica offers local fruit and vegetables, homemade jams, honey, dairy products, meat products, mushrooms, bread and pastries, as well as handmade products, on Saturdays from 7:00 to 10:30 a.m. The selection may vary. Gora pod Lipo offers wine tastings with matching snacks, as well as seasonal, locally inspired hot dishes and home-style cooking. Check in advance which tasting formats and dishes will be available on the day of your planned visit.

If you are looking for a hotel, first decide whether your trip will focus mainly on the architecture, the trails in the Pohorje or the regional cuisine.
