Sevnica combines the history of its castle and town with nature experiences in the hills on both sides of the Sava. The Sevniška planinska pot is a circular hiking trail that brings together nature, views, cultural heritage and a sense of regional connection in Posavje. There are also marked trails of varying difficulty, cycling routes and opportunities to enjoy the river. For planning your trip, you can choose a clear focus: the castle and old town, hiking and cycling, or activities on the Sava.

Sevnica Castle and its history

At Sevnica Castle, stories are told of a castle history spanning more than 700 years. A castle park and vineyard surround the castle. A nighttime lantern tour explores the history of the residence and Countess Mathilde Arco Zinneberg. In the wine cellar, visitors can sample the velvety taste of the castle wine Grajska kri. The area around the castle offers a range of cultural experiences: historical stories, the park and vineyard, and wine tasting.

Festivals also add seasonal highlights. The Blaufränkisch Wine Festival takes place at Sevnica Castle in summer. In March, Sevnica hosts the Salami Festival, known as Salamiada. If you are planning your trip around one of these festivals, check the specific dates in advance.

Old town and other traces of history

The Lutheran Cellar is considered the southernmost Protestant chapel in Europe and is known for its distinctive acoustics and frescoes. The old town reflects the character of the former town centre and its ancient walls. A few kilometres from the centre of Sevnica lie the remains of Ajdovski gradec, associated with settlement in the area more than 1,500 years ago. The castle and traces of settlement thus represent different historical periods. A miniature world in Sevnica also brings the history of the railway to life.

Hiking, cycling and time by the Sava

The hilly landscape around Sevnica, on both sides of the Sava, is criss-crossed by numerous marked trails of varying difficulty. The Sevniška planinska pot brings together nature, views, cultural heritage and a sense of regional connection on a circular hike. An 800-metre trail around the castle hill offers another way to explore nature. On the castle slope, a nature experience also connects energy points with the history of the castle.

Cyclists can also choose from a range of options: Sevnica and its surroundings offer well-maintained routes for road bikes and mountain bikes. Lisca has a developed climbing route and is also a popular starting point for paragliding. The Sava offers a different way to spend time outdoors, with opportunities for peaceful fishing as well as canoeing or boating. These activities differ considerably in character and offer options for a trip focused on culture, the hills or the river.
