Rigelj Pri Ortneku is part of the hilly landscape of Slemena, characterised by small, clustered villages and panoramic views. The wider region offers a choice of hikes, a cycling route, and historic sites. This makes a stay especially interesting if you would like to combine rural scenery with cultural history; you can choose specific routes and destinations to suit your preferred level of activity.

Landscape and Rural Traditions

Rigelj Pri Ortneku is part of the Slemena landscape. It is hilly, with panoramic views and small, clustered villages defining its character. One example of rural life is TuristiÄŤna kmetija Oblak: the family-run farm is managed and developed by the family to preserve a farm with a long tradition and make the surrounding nature accessible to visitors. If you would like to visit the farm, check visiting arrangements before you travel.

The Municipality of Ribnica’s tourism strategy for 2022–2028 names Turistična kmetija Oblak in Rigelj Pri Ortneku as the farm with the largest offering among the municipality’s four tourist farms. This comparison is time-specific; the offering may change.

Hiking and Cycling

The Kolesarjenje po kraški planoti Slemena cycling route runs through Gašpinovo, Rigelj, and Maršiči. Along a forest path, the route is marked as a walking trail. If you plan to follow it by bicycle or on foot, check the current signage before setting out.

Rigelj Pri Ortneku is linked as a nearby point to the Velike Lašče–Kamen vrh hiking route. Check local conditions before planning a specific hike. Another marked hiking option is the Slemenska krožna pot: its basic route is about 21 kilometres long and is also suitable for walking. The municipal route description dates from 2021; check the signage before setting out.

If you prefer a shorter loop, you can choose a marked, easy circular trail in the wider region. It is seven kilometres long and runs over asphalt and gravel. There is a hut at the summit of Grmada that is open at weekends; its operating hours may vary. In good weather, the view extends to Snežnik, the Julian Alps, the Karawanks, and the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

History and Nature in the Wider Region

In the wider region, Ortnek Castle, also known as Ortneški Stari grad, was built in the early 14th century on the 765-metre-high Veliki Žrnovec viewpoint hill near Hudi Konec. Only ruins remain. Grmada also has a historical dimension: the 887-metre-high hill lies above Vrh pri Poljanah in the Mala gora range and was an important strategic defence point during the Ottoman incursions of the 15th and 16th centuries.

In 2014, Rigelj Pri Ortneku was one of eleven villages surveyed by Muzej Ribnica as part of an ethnological study of the Slemena region. The fieldwork on architectural heritage documented houses using questionnaires and survey forms, and recorded conversations. Thus, alongside the landscape, the history of the buildings is also part of the cultural background of the village.

In the wider region, visible remains of a fish farm and a weir operated in the last century can be found at the source of the Ribnica. The area around the source of the Ribnica is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000.

Regional Cuisine

The culinary traditions of the Municipality of Ribnica include Ribn’ška trojka, a stew made with local red Ribn’čan beans, potatoes, and swede. Carrot can also be added if desired. Ribn’ška povanca is a sweet dish whose main ingredients are homemade milk, butter, and cream; it was traditionally prepared in the villages of Ribnica. The two specialities offer contrasting flavours: a savoury stew and a sweet dish based on dairy products.
