Hrib-Loški Potok combines Baroque religious architecture with a central hill, memorial sites and nature. At Tabor, views and local history come together; nearby, Ogenjca and Travnik tell of other historical traces. There are also gardens, karst fields and natural history topics. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether churches and history or landscape and natural history should shape your stay.
Tabor, Churches and Local History
Tabor is a central hill and viewpoint in Hrib, offering a view of the surrounding area. The Parish Church of St. Leonard, a Baroque central-plan church built around 1670, stands on Tabor. The Church of St. Barbara, a branch church, is located in the cemetery directly beside the parish church. The year 1673 is inscribed above its portal. Two churches with different architectural features thus stand together at Tabor: St. Leonard is described as a Baroque central-plan church, while the date above St. Barbara’s portal has been recorded.
The name of the hill also has a historical explanation. Tabor got its name because local residents sought safety there during Ottoman incursions. The viewpoint, churches and the story behind the name are thus connected to one specific place in Hrib.
Memorial Sites and Local Heritage
The Ogenjca cave is nearby; a secret wartime hospital was housed there during the Second World War. A memorial plaque stands at the entrance, and a log cabin nearby has also been converted into a memorial museum. In nearby Travnik, Jakob Bartol’s ethnographic collection displays items related to agriculture, transport and various crafts, including traditional potoško carpentry tools. While Ogenjca commemorates the wartime hospital, the collection offers a glimpse into work and everyday life. The living heritage of local carpentry is also presented in the Loški Potok area.
The local traditions preserved in Hrib-Loški Potok also include culinary traditions. They add another aspect of local heritage to the themes of churches, remembrance and crafts.
Garden, Views and Landscape
The Hribovski vrt, owned by the Knavs couple, is a park-like garden with flowering perennials, numerous maple trees, a pond and various wooden garden features. From the garden, there are views of the karst fields Travniško polje and Retijsko polje, as well as of Tabor hill. While Tabor offers a view of the surrounding area, the garden specifically overlooks two karst fields and the hill.
Nearby, a uvala can turn into a lake after heavy rain in autumn and spring. A 2021 description also identifies the Travniški potok stream and its sinkhole as a natural attraction of Hrib-Loški Potok.
Natural History and Planning Your Visit
The Naravoslovni dom at Hrib 112 offers exhibition spaces and natural history workshops on how people, forests and large carnivores live together. For bear photography, experienced hunters offer programmes from carefully equipped observation hides by arrangement. Registered guests are welcomed at Hribovski vrt with a homemade aperitif. The visits therefore work differently: bear photography requires an arrangement, while the garden welcome is for registered guests.
The traditional hike to the Partisan hospital at Ogenjca starts in Hrib and takes place on the last Saturday in July each year. Check the exact date before you travel. There are regular bus connections from Hrib-Loški Potok to Ljubljana; please check the current timetable when planning your trip.
