Draga can be viewed through several cultural lenses: the Resne njive Cultural Landscape, the Church of the Visitation of Mary and two monuments sit alongside a local programme of association activities and celebrations. When planning, it is worth noting the distinctions between a landscape and an individual cultural heritage unit, between the two memorial sites, and between historical dates and current event dates.
Cultural Landscape and Church
The Resne njive Cultural Landscape in Draga is designated as a cultural heritage unit in the category of cultural landscape in the forestry planning document for 2021–2030. The Church of the Visitation of Mary is classified as a unit of Slovenian cultural heritage. Draga therefore brings together two different scales: the landscape as a cultural heritage unit in its own right and the church as a single religious building. Check current access arrangements for the church separately before visiting.
Two Monuments, Different Memories
The monument “Žrtvam Dragarske doline” was unveiled in 1961. It takes the form of a twisted obelisk on a raised platform, with a figurative relief spiral and a block of stone bearing the names of the fallen. The monument “Draga, Spomenik padlim borcem” was unveiled in 1956. It commemorates Pejnovič Iso, Turk Stanko and Klepac Filip, who were shot there in August 1942. While the first monument stands out for its obelisk and relief design, the second focuses on the three people commemorated by name and the historical events.
To reach the monument “Draga, Spomenik padlim borcem,” in Draga turn onto a paved road just past the church, then take a left onto a forest road. After 200 metres, the monument is on the right in a small grassy hollow in the forest. Check local conditions before visiting.
Community Life and Parish Feast
The Draga Cultural and Sports Association organises sporting and cultural events. These include hikes and football tournaments as well as amateur theatre, children's workshops and intergenerational gatherings. The programme therefore offers a range of activities, from sports to theatre and meetings between generations. If you plan to travel for a particular activity, check the date and whether visitors can take part in advance.
The parish feast “žegnanje” in Draga was celebrated for several consecutive years through 2024 in connection with the Feast of the Visitation of Mary on 31 May. At the 2024 celebration, sweet and savoury foods were offered for tasting after Sunday Mass. For future trips, ask about the current feast programme; the food on offer may change.
What Matters When Planning Your Dates
The dates serve different purposes: August 1942 marks the historical events, 1956 and 1961 the unveiling of the monuments, and 31 May the date associated with the parish feast. When choosing your travel dates, it therefore matters whether you want a current association or feast programme to be part of your stay. Check dates and whether visitors can take part in advance. This helps you distinguish between visits to historical sites and a visit tied to a specific occasion when planning your trip.
