Jereka in the Upper Bohinj Valley combines a specific climb with a custom tied to the turn of the year. From here, you can set out for Vodnikov razglednik; the village is also one of the places where Otepanje is practised. This gives you two distinct focuses to choose from when planning your trip: a hike with a stated duration and elevation gain, and a cultural experience on 31 December. Other highlights include the sixth stage of the Juliana Trail, a historic route to Koprivnik and the Church of St Margaret. These distinctions can help you decide whether to visit Jereka as a hiking base or for a stay at the end of the year.

Hiking to Vodnikov razglednik

You can climb to Vodnikov razglednik from Jereka; the hike takes a little over an hour and involves an elevation gain of 387 metres. From the viewpoint, you can enjoy views across much of Bohinj and the surrounding Julian Alps. Vodnikov razglednik is at an elevation of 1,017 metres. When planning your hike, keep the two elevation figures distinct: 387 metres is the elevation gain, while 1,017 metres is the elevation of the destination. This gives you a clear picture of the approximate duration, the climb and the viewpoint’s location.

A path from the bridge in Jereka leads to Koprivnik, just below Vodnikov razglednik.

Jereka on the Juliana Trail

The sixth stage of the Juliana Trail descends through the forests and pastures of Pokljuka to Jereka. From there, it continues through Češnjica, Srednja vas and Studor to Stara Fužina. Jereka is therefore not the end point of this route; the named places mark the continuation of the stage. This distinguishes the Juliana Trail from the climb to Vodnikov razglednik: the former is a stage passing through a sequence of places, while the latter is a single hike.

Historic route to Koprivnik

The historic route from Jereka to Koprivnik was paved in the 18th century so that iron ore and charcoal from Pokljuka could be transported without obstruction. Ruts worn into the stone by wagon wheels are still visible. The route thus combines its historic role as a transport link with a visible detail in the stone: the ruts bring its former use by wagons to life.

Otepanje and the Church of St Margaret

Jereka is one of the villages in the Upper Bohinj Valley where Otepanje is practised. Masked New Year singers go from house to house. In Jereka, the custom takes place on New Year’s Eve, 31 December. This makes the timing clear for planning: Otepanje is part of the turn of the year and is a different reason to visit from the village’s hiking opportunities. The Church of St Margaret stands on a rise beside the road before Jereka in the Upper Bohinj Valley. It is a fine example of Baroque religious architecture, with an older medieval structure, a medieval painted bell tower and rich Renaissance and Baroque furnishings; the nave and presbytery are preserved. The older structure and later furnishings give the church several clearly identifiable historical layers.
