On the eastern side of Lake Sestrško, a walking path leads to the kozolec in Sestrže and the gallery of painter Branko Gajšta. There is also a nature trail for birdwatching by the lake. These distinct features—named destinations along the way or birdwatching—give Majšperk a specific natural and cultural perspective.
Church, Castle Name and Baroque Architecture
The Church of St Nicholas in Majšperk was first mentioned in 1261. The current building is said to date from 1639; it was renovated in 1929. The town’s name also bears a historical trace: Majšperk was named after the medieval Mansberg Castle.
Another glimpse of the area’s architectural history is Hamre Manor in the municipality. It is a single-storey, rectangular building with a Baroque façade. A chapel tower with stucco decorations and a Baroque room fountain is attached to the house. The information about the church and the manor offers different perspectives: a long-established local history in one case, and specific features of Baroque architecture in the other.
Gallery and Textile History
In the municipality of Majšperk, Breg Gallery offers free exhibition visits every Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm. Visits can be arranged in advance during municipal office hours. Organised groups can also arrange a visit in advance outside regular hours. As visitor information can change, check the opening times beforehand and confirm any agreed appointments in good time.
The Museum of Wool and Tapestries preserves memories of the former textile industry in the Podravje region and is connected with the former Majšperk wool factory. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. The main difference in visitor arrangements between these two cultural attractions is that the gallery has a regular Saturday slot, while the museum requires advance booking.
Exploring the Lake
On the eastern side of Lake Sestrško, a walking path leads to the kozolec in Sestrže and the gallery of painter Branko Gajšta. Those interested in birdwatching will also find a dedicated nature trail by the lake. This lets you keep the two interests distinct without having to combine them into a single outing: one path leads to named destinations, while the other is for birdwatching.
Mill and E-Bikes
The village mill in Naraplje was restored by the villagers under the auspices of the Naraplje Tourist Association and is once again powered by water. The restoration of a local mill operation is therefore another distinctive feature of the municipality.
A municipal notice published in 2021 listed two Cube e-bikes for hire. Keys had to be collected and formalities completed at the municipal office at Majšperk 39. If you plan to use this option, confirm current availability and conditions before travelling.
Ptujska Gora: Pilgrimage and Rural Life
Near Majšperk, on Ptujska Gora, stands the Basilica of Mary, Protectress. It is the municipality of Majšperk’s principal pilgrimage and museum site. This means that, alongside buildings within the municipality, a nearby place also adds to Majšperk’s cultural highlights.
Also on Ptujska Gora, the Starotrška House hosts an ethnographic museum of rural life. Its collection includes old objects and furniture, a black kitchen, an open hearth and a bread oven. The collection focuses on everyday life and rural culture, while the basilica has a different focus on pilgrimage and the museum. Together, these places offer a range of cultural themes to consider when deciding to visit Majšperk.
