A house of Baroque farmhouse architecture from the late 18th century and a 21 km cycling route through Jareninski Dol offer two concrete starting points for planning your trip. There are also notable religious buildings, a museum with a permanent exhibition and a wine cellar. This lets you consider culture, music history and outdoor activities as different focal points for your trip.
Building history and religious architecture
The house at Jareninski Dol 64 is a well-preserved example of Baroque farmhouse architecture from the end of the 18th century. Its classification as farmhouse architecture draws attention to a rural building style, while its date places the house in the late Baroque period. A plague marker dating from 1532 also stands on the road towards Å entilj.
The cemetery chapel in Jareninski Dol is round and dates from the second half of the 19th century. It stands in the cemetery above the southern part of the settlement. Inside are tombstones of priests and soldiers from Jarenina who fell in the First World War. There is also a sarcophagus and a depiction of the Crucified Christ.
Beside the church stands the round charnel house of St Michael. Its masonry dates from the 12th century; it is also one of the rare surviving examples of this type of architecture in Slovenia. The Church of the Assumption of Mary presents a different architectural combination: its nave is partly Romanesque, while the rest is entirely Late Gothic. The Late Gothic bell tower has an original stone roof, considered unique in Slovenia.
Music history and wine
The Alfi NipiÄ Museum has a permanent exhibition devoted to the life and musical career of singer Alfi NipiÄ. It features photographs and posters, as well as audio and video materials, articles and books. The collection also includes gold records, awards, plaques, medals and traditional clothing. The variety of objects offers several ways to explore the biography and musical career.
In the museum cellar, a wine cellar offers tastings of wine and sparkling wine from local winegrowers. The music exhibition and wine-related offering therefore provide different themes for a visit. Cars and buses can park right next to the museum. A multipurpose hall on the top floor is intended for musical performances and cultural and educational events.
Cycling and hiking
The 21 km PesnicaāJarenina cycling route passes through Jareninski Dol. Another route option is the Jarenina hiking trail: it starts at Gostilna Lipa and runs for 18 km through Jarenina, Vajgen, PoliÄki Vrh, Vukovski Vrh and Vukovski Dol. The two distances refer to different activities; the cycling route is not the same as the hiking trail.
Overall, the Jarenina hiking trail is considered less demanding and is suitable for recreational hikers. However, some climbs include more strenuous sections. Zmrzlek, known for its cold spring, is a sight along the trail.
Jarenina and the surrounding area
Nearby, Jareninski dvor, dating from 1074, stands on PoliÄki Vrh. Until 1907, it was the economic and administrative seat of Admont Abbey for its estates in the Slovenske gorice. Jarenina also played an important historical role in this area and was one of the Pražupnija. Most of the older houses in Jarenina have been restored, while the settlement centre has retained its distinctive appearance.
Local traditions also offer further ideas for planning your trip. Traditional dishes include āKoruzni tomerl z jabolkiā and āJareninska gibanicaā. The Jarenina parish festival takes place on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. The āDoživi Kulakaā project draws on the story of the film āMoj ata, socialistiÄni kulakā, which was filmed in Jarenina, and includes an exhibition and a festival.
To choose the focus of your trip, it helps to distinguish between the options: cycling through Jareninski Dol, the hiking trail around Jarenina, or cultural and historical themes. This way, you can combine your search for a suitable holiday apartment with the experiences that matter most to you on your trip.
