Škocjan lies in the Radulja Valley. The town brings together a history spanning seven centuries, church art, the memory of Ignacij Knoblehar, and two distinct walking routes: the Knobleharjeva Trail begins in front of the municipal building, while hikers set off on a separate hike on the Metelkova Trail every February. Those planning a stay can thus distinguish between the town’s history and a recurring hiking event.

Town History and the Church

Škocjan was first mentioned in 1306. Its parish is one of the oldest in Slovenia. The date provides a specific reference point in the town’s history, while the parish’s standing offers a glimpse into Škocjan’s place in Slovenia’s early church history. Together, the two details present distinct historical perspectives rather than describing the same episode.

The 17th-century Church of St. Cancius and Companions, “Cerkev sv. Kancijana in tovarišev mučencev,” occupies a prominent position on a rise in the center of Škocjan. The presbytery houses the painting “Sv. Kancijana v slavi,” by Matej Sternen. Beneath the gallery, south of Jeršetič’s tomb, there is a memorial plaque to Dr. Ignacij Knoblehar, a missionary and explorer of the White Nile. Knoblehar is thus encountered in two contexts: on the plaque in the church and as the namesake of the route.

Bridge over the Radulja

The stone, two-arched bridge over the Radulja is one of the few bridges of its kind still preserved in Dolenjska, thanks to its dimensions, shape, and construction. A road crossing the bridge connects the Krka Valley with the Sava Valley. The bridge’s design and the road’s function are two different aspects: its distinctive construction describes the structure, while the road over it links the valleys.

Trails with Different Connections

The Knobleharjeva Trail begins in Škocjan in front of the municipal building and connects places in the surrounding area associated with Ignacij Knoblehar. Its theme is therefore a person and the places linked to him. The hike on the Metelkova Trail is different: hikers set off from Metelkov every February. For travel planning, these are two distinct details—the Knobleharjeva Trail has a named starting point and thematic route, while the Metelkova Trail is associated with an annual hike and its month.

Events and Guided Tours

The Škocjan na Dolenjskem Tourist Association lists the accordion competition “Tekmovanje harmonikarjev” among its annual events. The Kmečke igre are held every year around the PGD Škocjan fire station at the time of the municipal holiday KNOBLEHARJEVO. Jelka is a tourist guide who takes larger and smaller groups to Škocjan’s sights.
