At Dvor, the Krka combines a striking natural feature with several ways to experience the river: natural tufa barriers form waterfalls, while fishing, boating and swimming are also local activities. The area also offers foundry history, a Natura 2000 centre, art and a themed cycling and hiking route. Depending on your interests, you can focus on Dvor as either a nature or cultural destination, rather than trying to fit every theme into a single outing.

The Krka: Tufa Barriers and Water Activities

The nationally significant natural feature “Dvor – tufa barriers” on the Krka near Dvor consists of geomorphological and geological tufa barriers. At Dvor, the river forms waterfalls over natural tufa barriers. These distinctive river formations and waterfalls are at the heart of the landscape experience.

Fishing, boating and swimming are other ways to enjoy the Krka near Dvor. When planning your visit, it is worth treating the natural feature and the activities as separate focal points: you can concentrate on the geological landmark or combine your time by the river with one of the water activities mentioned above.

Foundry History and Nature Interpretation

The Železo-livarski muzej in Dvor displays original castings from the local foundry tradition and offers a practical demonstration of casting. Both the preserved cast works and the craft process are central to the experience. The Auersperg iron foundry in Dvor operated from 1795 to 1891. It produced artistic castings and iron elements for bridges, including parts for the famous Shoemaker’s Bridge in Ljubljana.

The restored foundry complex is also home to the Natura 2000 Interpretation and Information Centre. There, visitors can explore the local Krka ecosystem. A guided tour of the Auersperg iron foundry complex is available by prior arrangement, so be sure to arrange it in advance.

A Longer Route to Memorials

The themed cycling and hiking route “Po poti spomenikov in spominskih obeležij NOB 1941–1945” offers a different historical perspective. The 69-kilometre circular route passes through Dvor pri Žužemberku and allows visitors to see 21 monuments and memorials to the National Liberation Struggle (NOB). Dvor is one stop on a longer route devoted to memorials commemorating the years 1941 to 1945.

This route focuses on a different period from the history of the iron foundry: the Auersperg iron foundry dates from 1795 to 1891, while the cycling and hiking route commemorates the years 1941 to 1945. If you are interested in both topics, you can plan them as separate chapters of history during your stay.

Art and the Dvorski Art Days

The DLD Gallery in Dvor displays artworks from the Dvorski Art Days, an international gathering of visual artists. Admission to the gallery is free, but advance registration is required. The Dvorski Art Days take place in early August as a working event and have become a tradition.

If the Dvorski Art Days are important to your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance. This will help you distinguish a gallery visit from a stay planned around the working event itself. Alongside the museum, foundry complex and memorial route, the art-related attractions offer a distinct way to experience Dvor beyond the activities on the Krka.
