The parish church of Saint Peter and the Coronini mansion offer two different ways to explore the architectural history of Šempeter Pri Gorici. They are joined by local festival traditions, remembrance culture, garden history and climbing. Before planning your visit, you can consider whether buildings, events or local history should be the focus of your stay.
The Town’s Architectural History
The parish church of Saint Peter stands on Trg Ivana Roba. After its destruction during the Isonzo Front, it was designed by Maks Fabiani; in 1929, the Archbishop of Gorizia, Frančišek Borgia Sedej, consecrated the church. The sequence of destruction, design and consecration provides a clear framework for the history of the church’s construction.
The Coronini mansion represents a different architectural history: it dates from the 17th century and was remodelled between 1927 and 1930 to designs by Maks Fabiani. Comparing the two reveals the architect’s different roles: designing the parish church after its destruction and remodelling an older mansion.
Villa Maffei and the View
Villa Maffei, also known as Mafejšče, stands on a walled viewing terrace on the southern slope of Colle San Marco, north of the centre of Šempeter Pri Gorici. Here, the walls, terrace and hillside all form part of the description of its setting. For anyone interested in architecture in its landscape context, it offers a distinct focus alongside the history of the church and mansion.
A viewpoint offers views of Gorica, the Šempeter plain and Friuli. These three named sights add a landscape perspective to the architectural history.
Festivals and Activities
Šempeter’s carnival tradition dates back to 1946 and includes a parade with groups and floats from Slovenia and Italy. Saint Peter’s Day on 29 June combines a local festival with a ball in the square. Step Out of the Dark is an evening torchlight run covering five kilometres through the streets of Šempeter; it has been organised since 1997. The events are quite distinct: a parade, a festival and ball, and a run over a specified distance. Check the event dates for your travel period before your trip.
Remembrance, Gardening Tradition and Climbing
A small First World War collection is located below the Šempeter post office. It displays military memorabilia from the Isonzo Front and from Šempeter and its surroundings. Alongside the history of the front, it also highlights local objects of remembrance.
The area’s historic gardening heritage includes early vegetables and Ušaj double-flowered violets. These themes complement the architectural and commemorative history with a local cultivation tradition.
The DEŠ climbing wall at Ivan Rob Primary School has more than 8,000 holds across an area of 1,000 square metres. These two figures give climbing a concrete place among the activities you may consider for your stay.
