Gradac combines a protected castle of national importance with a large bend in the Lahinja River and a layered local history. The town extends along both banks of the river. For travelers who want to combine culture and scenery, the castle, park, cycling route and local memorial sites provide a clear thematic framework. You can choose Gradac based on whether you want to focus mainly on historic buildings, the river landscape, or several of these aspects during your stay.

Castle and Park as the Main Attraction

Gradac Castle is protected as a cultural monument of national importance and is one of the best-preserved castles in Bela krajina. Its current appearance dates from the first half of the 19th century. At the same time, the medieval castle stands on a meander of the Lahinja. These references to different periods describe distinct aspects of the same building: its medieval origins and the form that gave it its present-day appearance in the 19th century. If you are interested in architectural history, this combination is a particularly notable focus.

The park was laid out behind the castle, and its basic layout has been preserved to this day. It is the only documented castle garden in Bela krajina. The garden therefore has a clear regional connection and is also part of the castle grounds. The park also contains a grave with a stone sarcophagus. This detail adds a specific memorial site to the history of the building and garden. The castle and park thus offer two different ways to explore Gradac’s cultural history: the architecture of the building and the preserved layout of its garden.

Memorial Sites in Gradac

Local history is also connected with Sokolski dom. The Red Cross of Slovenia was founded there on 18 June 1944. Gradac has a memorial room commemorating this founding. Another historical marker is the monument unveiled on 29 April 1951. It bears the names of 41 fallen combatants and victims of fascist violence from Gradac, Klošter and Vranoviči. The memorial sites emphasize different things: the memorial room commemorates the founding of an organization, while the monument commemorates people from three places. Together with the history of the castle, they offer several ways to explore local history.

River Landscape and the Kučar Cycling Route

The Kučar cycling route offers an active way to explore the area. It leads towards Gradac, where a medieval castle stands on a meander of the Lahinja. Gradac itself lies on both banks of the Lahinja, at a large bend in the river. The town’s location and the cycling route give the river landscape a concrete place in your travel plans. Novo Mesto can be reached by car or train for the Kučar cycling route. Check current transport connections before setting out; you should also check the current condition of the route before a cycling trip.
