Litija offers an unusual introduction to local history: the former wooden bridge was the first in Zasavje, and Limonite stalactites can be seen in the Sitarjevec Mine.

Bridge History and Old Town

The wooden bridge in Litija was built in 1855, connected Litija and Gradec, and was the first bridge in Zasavje. It became a city landmark and promenade; the original wooden structure was replaced in 1974.

The Litija City Museum presents the history and life of the town, including rafting and shipping on the Sava, the railway and the Sitarjevec Mine. The museum brings together the history of the river, transport and mining. Check visiting hours before your visit.

The parish church of St. Nicholas stands in the Old Town and was expanded into a cruciform church in several construction phases. The Farbar Turn, also known as Litijski Turn, is also part of local history: it is the oldest building in Litija. Historians date its origins to the 14th century.

Sitarjevec: Minerals and Mining

Limonite stalactites can be seen in the main tunnel of the mine. The mine is considered the only known place in Central Europe with growing Limonite stalactites. Advance arrangements may be required to access the main tunnel.

Some of the more than 60 mineral species found there can be seen in the mine’s tourist area. The tour of the main tunnel passes through an authentic mining environment and lasts up to two hours. Check visiting and booking arrangements in advance.

The traditional miners’ meal “Sitarjevška mal'ca” is also served at the mine. Check availability when booking.

Hiking Trails with Different Routes

The Levstik Trail connects Litija and Čatež. It starts on Levstikova ulica in the Old Town and is marked with more than 80 information boards. Check the trail markings on site before setting out.

The Badjura Trail passes through the surrounding hills and encircles the valley of Litija and Šmartno. It is one of the mountain hiking loops registered by the Alpine Association of Slovenia. The trails differ mainly in their routes: the Levstik Trail connects two named places, while the Badjura Trail encircles the valley through the hills. Conditions on the Badjura Trail can change seasonally.

More Activities in the Surrounding Region
