Šenčur combines a Baroque church and a museum with exhibitions on ceramics and models; a monument to the potato and Maria Theresa also stands in the town centre. Plan your stay around architectural history, changing cultural offerings and seasonal activities. The surrounding area also offers its own nature and walking trails.

Church and Local History

Cerkev sv. Jurija, in the centre of Šenčur, was built in 1747 in the Baroque style on the site of an older church. A partly preserved section of the anti-Ottoman defensive wall remains behind the church. The church is part of a protected cultural heritage site of art-historical significance, which also includes remains of the former fortifications, the rectory and the chaplain’s house.

Another focal point in the town is the monument to the potato and Maria Theresa. It highlights a theme that also recurs in local festival traditions. Blagnetova hiša, in the centre, was rebuilt to reflect its former appearance; part of the town’s cultural heritage was preserved in the new building. Together, the church, monument and buildings offer different ways to explore Šenčur’s local history.

Museum and Exhibitions

The Šenčur Museum has a permanent exhibition on ceramics in Slovenia and also holds monthly exhibitions. Anyone interested in models and dioramas can find more than 20 exhibits of this kind across two floors in the “Slovenija v malem” exhibition. Since the exhibition programme may change, it is advisable to check whether this exhibition is currently on display before visiting.

The museum also offers creative workshops, including model-making workshops. Availability may vary depending on the programme. Ceramics, models and hands-on workshops offer different focuses, so you can choose according to whether you are mainly interested in seeing exhibitions or taking part in a creative activity.

Cycle Races, Festival and Seasonal Activities

The traditional road cycling event Velika nagrada Šenčurja – Memorial Bojana Udoviča takes place in the centre. It is held on a 1.3-kilometre circuit; the route may change from one edition to the next. The date and programme also vary each year, so it is worth checking the details of the relevant edition when planning your visit.

The traditional Praznik krompirja festival is also held in Šenčur. It is organised by the local tourism association with the support of the municipality and local clubs; the date and programme change each year. Another seasonal option is the covered ice rink Pokrito drsališče Šenčur in Športni park Šenčur. Check the operating details of this seasonal attraction before visiting. Godla represents a local culinary tradition; it is prepared by the Šenčur Tourism Association according to an original Šenčur recipe.

Tree-lined Avenues and Trails Nearby

Local landscape features include a well-maintained maple avenue along Pipanova cesta and an avenue of birch and maple trees in front of the Šenčur cemetery. These are distinctive features of the town and complement the church and museum with another aspect of its local character.

Nearby, the Srjanska učna pot offers two options: a shorter route through flat terrain and a longer one over Srjanski hrib. Both follow existing forest trails; sturdy footwear is recommended for the longer route. Rare bird species can also be observed nearby from a viewing station on the edge of a lake. The island itself is not accessible to visitors. These activities offer different experiences: the trails give you a choice of two routes, while birdwatching is limited to the station on the lakeshore.

Choose When to Visit and What to Focus On

When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between permanent features of the town and changing activities. The church, monument and avenues are there year-round; exhibitions, workshops, the cycle race, festival and ice rink, on the other hand, are subject to programme, date or seasonal conditions that you should check in advance. This lets you choose Šenčur based on your interest in local history, culture, cycle races or the surrounding area, without having to fit the individual activities into a fixed itinerary.
