A notable natural landmark in Kokra is Vobenca Waterfall: it is 20 metres high and lies at an elevation of 846 metres. The names Lobnica and Lobinca are also commonly used for it. Together with the river landscape and historic freight routes, it offers a clear focus for a stay: you can explore the water and scenery or follow the traces of older transport routes on foot.

Waterfall and protected river area

The access route to the waterfall described in 2024 starts in Zgornja Kokra and follows the stream bed without a path. The stream must be crossed several times along the way. Storms can alter the gorge, so check its current condition before planning this route.

The wild streams in the upper and middle reaches of the Kokra are part of the Natura 2000 site and are subject to special nature protection. Plan your activities in accordance with the applicable nature conservation rules. The river section is mainly home to native brown trout and introduced rainbow trout. Further downstream towards Kranj, grayling and chub are also found. Fly fishing in Kokra is permitted with an artificial fly; check the current permit and regulations requirements in advance.

Historic freight routes and local history

The first section of the historic Možjanca–Kokra freight route ends in the village of Kokra. The section is 7 kilometres long, takes about two and a half hours on foot and has an elevation gain of 500 metres. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.

The second section of the historic Kokra–Celar Bridge freight route runs along the eastern slope above the Kokra Valley. In the village centre, it passes the Church of the Immaculate Conception and the schools.

Hikes and views

The hiking trail to the Čemšenik Hut starts at the entrance to Kokra. Vehicles can be parked on the right by the transformer or at the bus stop; check the current parking situation. At the hut, signs for the panoramic trail below Javorov vrh in the Kokra Valley point east. The trail offers views of Krvavec, the Ljubljana Plain, Grintovec, Kočna and the Julian Alps.

To reach the Dolga Njiva mountain pasture, turn towards Spodnja Kokra at the road markers between 10.5 and 10 kilometres, follow the signs towards the Roblek farmstead and park in a medium-sized car park. The route passes below an extensive rockslide and then reaches the broad mountain pastures of Dolga Njiva. Bring suitable mountain gear and check road and parking conditions in advance.

The challenging route to the Suhadolnik and Cojz huts starts at a turn-off in Kokra towards the Suhadolnik farmstead; you can park your car below the farmstead. Check current conditions and equipment requirements before setting out.

Cycling by the river

A cycling route runs close to the peaceful Kokra River and passes through the village of Kokra for almost half its length. Its course through the village and along the river differs from the hiking routes described above. Road conditions and traffic may vary.
