A cultural place with a history

Those who want to get to know Pobegi through its culture will find a focal point in the Narodni dom. Members of the local singing and reading society “Ilirija” built the house in 1903. Cultural and social events were held at the Narodni dom; the building represents the cultural and social life of Pobegi and Čežarji. Its construction date and use point to two aspects of this place: the commitment of a local society and the shared cultural significance of the house for both villages. The name of the society at the time refers to singing and reading, while the Narodni dom is associated with local cultural events. In this way, the history of a society is connected with the role of a house that represents the cultural life of both villages.

The history of the society, literature and art

The Kulturno društvo Pobegi - Čežarji also shapes local cultural life. It is the successor to earlier local cultural societies and presents local artists at the Narodni dom Pobegi. Its cultural programme includes literary evenings with invited poets and writers, as well as exhibitions of handicraft tools, products of local crafts and visual art. Literature, crafts and visual art each bring a different focus. At the 2010 municipal holiday, the Kulturno društvo Pobegi - Čežarji received the grand plaque of the Mestna občina Koper. The award recognised its revival of Istrian customs and the passing down of folk heritage from generation to generation. The award adds a specific connection to the preservation of local customs to the society’s history.

Leisure activities and Šagra

The local programme also includes cycling trips and sports games. Unlike literary evenings and exhibitions, these activities have different focuses: cycling trips centre on exercise, while sports games centre on playing together. The programme therefore extends beyond literature and art to include shared leisure activities. The traditional Šagra Pobegi - Čežarji is a distinct type of event. It features performances by numerous local music groups; Slovenian heavy metal bands have performed at the Črne šagre. A monument as a historical landmark

Another historical focal point is the monument in Pobegi. It commemorates 42 fallen fighters and activists, as well as 13 victims of fascist violence from the villages of Čežarji and Pobegi. The dedication distinguishes between these two groups and explicitly names both villages. Here, remembrance takes centre stage alongside the history of societies and events. The monument thus offers a different perspective on the history of Pobegi and Čežarji from the cultural programme and musical events.
