Church and Remembrance

The Church of Mary in Dobova was built in 1865 in the Neo-Romanesque style. It was destroyed during the Second World War and later restored. One distinctive design detail is the base of the altar: it is boat-shaped and was designed by Jože Plečnik. The year of construction, destruction and restoration form a clear historical sequence; the altar base adds a distinctive architectural detail.

The memorial to the displaced in Dobova was unveiled on 7 June 2000. It commemorates people who were displaced during the Second World War or had to flee deportation. The Slovenian words “Spomin in opomin,” meaning “Remembrance and Warning” in English, are inscribed on the memorial. Together, the dedication, date and inscription give the memorial site a clear historical context.

The Fašjenk Dobova carnival takes place every year. More than 1,000 masked participants from Slovenia and abroad gather for Fašjenk; the scale and programme may vary from one edition to the next.
