Ajdovščina can be explored through several distinct themes: the Roman fortress of Castra, archaeological and palaeontological collections, Veno Pilon’s art, and the nature trail along the Hubelj. When planning your visit, it helps to decide whether you would rather focus on the city’s history and museums or take a walk outdoors. A guided tour also explores the old town centre.
Roman traces in Ajdovščina
Construction of the Roman fortress of Castra began around 270. It was part of the defence system on the eastern border of the Roman Empire. Almost the entire Roman city wall, with its fourteen towers, has survived. Archaeological excavations are on display in a square in Ajdovščina, including a reconstructed Roman tower. In different places, you can explore the city wall, the fortress’s historical context and archaeological finds as distinct ways of discovering the Roman past.
Archaeology, fossils and art
The permanent archaeological exhibition of the Ajdovščina Museum Collection is titled “Fluvio frigido – Castra – Flovius – Ajdovščina”. It traces the development of Ajdovščina from prehistoric times to the early Middle Ages. Another permanent collection at the same museum is devoted to fossils: it includes about 1,200 specimens from across Slovenia, including extremely rare examples and some fossils discovered for the first time anywhere in the world. The two collections have different focuses—one on the town’s development over time, the other on fossils from across the country.
The Pilon Gallery Ajdovščina is both a museum and a venue for exhibitions of contemporary visual art. Its permanent collection of works by Veno Pilon includes drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs, as well as documentary materials and personal belongings. A reconstruction of the artist’s studio is also on display. If you are interested in particular art forms and the person behind the work, this offers a different focus from the archaeological exhibition or the fossil collection.
The Hubelj Nature Trail and its natural features
The nature trail along the Hubelj River is a 3,100-metre circular route. It starts at the Pale Sports Park and runs just outside the city of Ajdovščina. Its 24 stops cover the geological bedrock and soils of the Vipava Valley, the plant and animal life along the Hubelj, rocks and the aquatic ecosystem, as well as the dry Školj karst meadow. The route therefore offers several clearly defined natural history topics, from soils to habitats.
After heavy rainfall, waterfalls can form at the source of the Hubelj: water emerges from numerous karst fissures and plunges into the riverbed. This phenomenon depends on this weather condition. If it is of particular interest to you, look out for possible waterfalls after heavy rainfall. The trail’s circular route and stated total length also give you a concrete framework for planning your time outdoors.
Guided tour and choosing a hotel
As an urban alternative to the nature trail, the experience “Secrets of the Roman Fortress Castra” offers an informative and playful guided tour of Ajdovščina’s old town. It gives you a chance to explore Roman history on a walk through the old town centre. Dates and booking conditions may change; check them before making plans.
These themes offer different starting points for your stay, without requiring you to fit them all into a single visit.
