The municipality of Zubák extends across the northern part of the White Carpathians, in the upper section of the valley of the same name and in the valley of the Zubák stream. This location connects the village to a distinctive landscape: the mountains, valley and stream all share the same geographical reference here.

The valley and its elevation

The municipal area lies between 400 and 854 metres above sea level; the village centre is at 420 metres. These figures refer to different areas: the elevation range covers the entire municipality, while the figure of 420 metres describes the village centre. The municipal area is also home to a sulfurous mineral spring. Žrnova offers places to enjoy the views.

Churches, chapels and wooden houses

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Vendelin dates from the early 19th century and stands on the site of an older wooden church. The history of this sacred building therefore goes back beyond the present church. Another chapel, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, was built by Rudolf, Eduard and Martin Slabý in 1944. The three continue to look after its preservation to this day.

A chapel of Saint Vendelin is also part of the village’s history. It was built in gratitude after an outbreak of livestock disease ended in the 1920s, and today belongs to the Roman Catholic Church in the parish of Zubák. The church and chapel share the same saint’s name but are separate buildings.

The municipal area is also home to wooden houses dating from the 19th century. They have three rooms; an upper floor and a gallery are often added. Their design includes a rear gabled roof made of straw. Some buildings may not be open to the public. If you would like to visit a particular house, check in advance whether access is possible.

Traces of the forestry railway

A forestry railway ran from Lednické Rovne into the cadastral area of the municipality of Zubák in the White Carpathians. It is no longer in operation. At kilometre 15.6, a railway triangle called Lazy was built within the municipality. It was part of the forestry railway and was used to turn the locomotive around. The route designation and its specific technical function make this section a distinct chapter in local industrial history.

Festivals and traditions

The annual Carnival celebrations include a procession through the municipality and the symbolic burial of the double bass, followed by festivities. The Lucia and St Nicholas traditions are also kept alive. On St Lucia’s Day, veiled girls go from house to house and symbolically drive away evil forces with goose wings. For the St Nicholas tradition, boys dress up as St Nicholas and the devil, hand out sweets to children and read humorous news from the past year in the municipality. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these traditions, check the dates in advance.

Route 23 and practical planning

Route 23, Mestečko–Zubák–Lednica–Lednické Rovne, follows the same markings through the entire village of Zubák and is rated moderate. Public transport is recommended for this route because the starting and ending points are different. Check current connections and trail conditions before setting out. This helps distinguish route planning from the local themes: the trail offers a marked route through the village, while the architectural history and traditions are its cultural highlights.
