Location and Landscape
Outside the village centre, 32 kopanice settlements shape the landscape of Lysá pod Makytou. The Slovak border municipality lies in the Lýssky Pass at the foot of the Javorníky and White Carpathians. Its terrain is hilly, upland and mountainous, with elevations ranging from about 350 to 922 m.
Folklore and Architectural History
Folklórna Lysá is an annual folklore event held in the amphitheatre of Lysá pod Makytou. An announcement from 2026 lists it as the 29th edition. The programme features traditional songs, music and dances, as well as a crafts street and creative workshops for children. If you are travelling for the festival, check the date of the edition you wish to attend.
A distinctive building in the village is the Church of Saint Stephen: the Neoclassical, single-nave church has an integrated tower and a high altar dating from 1824. Inside, there is also an artistically valuable statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, created by the Kafkovi brothers from Moravia. Further examples of architecture can be found in the districts: Strelenka has a wooden bell tower dating from 1933, while Beňadín has a chapel in a natural setting. The village also has a former state school building from 1912.
Cycling: Two Different Routes
Green Route 5314 is a road cycling route classified as REKREA. It is 15.6 km long, has an asphalt surface, and includes 607 m of ascent and 66 m of descent. Its starting point in Lysá pod Makytou is at a junction with a red cycling magistrale. It ends at the Javorka saddle below Kohútka, where it meets the red Javornícka cycling magistrale.
The Javornícka cycling magistrale, red Route 053, is longer at 19.8 km and is designated for experienced mountain bikers. Its surfaces include asphalt, gravel and natural ground. It runs from Lúky pod Makytou to Lysá pod Makytou, crosses the road there and then climbs through the village streets. Its length, classification and surface therefore provide concrete points of comparison when choosing between these two cycling options.
Hiking, Nature and Outdoor Activities
Hiking trail 8584 from Lysá pod Makytou to Makyta alternates between forests and meadows, passes through the settlement of Okrajkovci and by a cross, and continues to the Hrnčár saddle. From there, you can enjoy views of the surrounding area. On summer and autumn walks through the countryside, you may find wild strawberries, raspberries and blackberries; with a little luck, you may also find blueberries in the Beňadín district.
The publicly accessible multi-purpose sports field on the school grounds is available to children, teenagers and adults. Possible sports include small-sided football, nohejbal, volleyball, tennis, handball and floorball. The Skipark Dešná ski area, with two downhill pistes, is also located within the cadastral area of Lysá pod Makytou.
