Zemianske Kostoľany lies on the banks of the Nitra. To the west, the village is bounded by the southern foothills of Malá Magura; to the east, by the ridges of Vtáčnik. These clearly distinguishable landscape boundaries give the setting a concrete frame. The architectural history is also varied: manor houses, a residential tower, a kúria, and several churches reflect different periods of construction and uses. Those considering a culturally oriented stay will find more than a single architectural style here: Renaissance influences, Romanesque origins, and ecclesiastical architectural history can be explored side by side.

Manor Houses and Their Building Phases

The Renaissance manor house was built around 1570 and later altered; typical Renaissance elements have been preserved. The manor house has a publicly accessible Renaissance park. The Karolkin manor house was also built in the Renaissance style in the first half of the 17th century, but was altered at the end of the 19th century. The sequence of changes to the Kišasonkin manor house can be stated precisely: it was built in 1727, extended by an additional storey in 1818, and converted in 1836 into an Empire-style villa with an open columned loggia. By comparison, the Renesančný kaštieľ is notable for its preserved Renaissance elements, while the Kišasonkin kaštieľ is notable for its dated conversion into an Empire-style villa.

Residential Tower and Noble Dwelling

The Obytná veža was built around 1570 and, with the exception of the Dolné Lelovce district, is the oldest building in Zemianske Kostoľany. It originally served as a residential tower, an unusual function for this type of building. The single-storey Jožičkina kúria is a typical example of the traditional dwelling of the lower nobility. Barrel, lunette, Prussian, and cross vaults have been preserved inside it. Thus, an unusual original use of a building and a dwelling whose interior is characterized by several specifically named types of vault stand side by side.

Churches from Different Centuries

Construction dates, styles, and historical events help distinguish the churches. The Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist was built in 1699–1701 in a pseudo-Renaissance and early Baroque style. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is in the Dolné Lelovce district; its Romanesque origins date from the 12th century to the first half of the 13th century. In the case of the Evangelical Articular Church, permission to build was granted in 1734, and it was consecrated in 1736. The approval and consecration mark different stages in its history. An old cemetery surrounds the Evangelical church. The churches’ historical span thus extends from Romanesque origins to the construction and consecration history of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Several manor houses are also cited as evidence of the rich regional history in the wider Upper Nitra area; Zemianske Kostoľany is expressly included in this context. This regional perspective complements the architectural histories of the individual buildings in the village.
