Tužina lies on the southeastern foothills of the Strážovská hornatina. The surrounding forests and historic buildings give the village two distinct focal points: nature experiences and architectural history. There is also a municipal museum that can be visited year-round and a recurring local tradition.

Forests, trails and landscape

The surrounding forests offer opportunities for hiking, while numerous forest trails also provide opportunities for mountain biking. The Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area extends near Tužina. The route from Tužina to the distinctive village of Čičmany, which tourists seek out, offers a different kind of outing. This means forest activities and the journey to another village stand alongside each other as distinct focal points. When planning your excursions, you can decide whether hiking, mountain biking or a trip to Čičmany should take centre stage.

Municipal museum and collection

The municipal museum can be visited year-round; check the local visiting arrangements before you travel. Its permanent exhibition is housed in a residential building built in 1905 and reconstructed. It comprises items reconstructed and exhibited from the collection of Kornélia Richterová and other residents of the village. Both the residential building and the objects in the permanent exhibition are therefore part of Tužina’s cultural heritage.

Church, chapel and Marian column

The single-nave Baroque Roman Catholic Church of St. James was built between 1788 and 1797 on medieval foundations. The plans were drawn up by Kremnica master builder J. Vogelt. Its furnishings include a main altar, a pulpit, a baptismal font, a four-section organ and four candlesticks. The furnishings are attributed to the 18th-century Classicist style and feature elaborate carved wooden depictions. The interior paintings also have their own restoration history: work began in 2002 and continued until spring 2007.

At the upper end of Tužina stands the Baroque Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, built in 1818. Its Baroque altar features carvings, a Pietà sculpture and two angels from the 18th century. Opposite the church stands a Marian column built in 1749 in the Late Baroque style. It is surrounded by an ornately carved marble wall. Academic sculptor Dušan Hagara completely reconstructed the column; it was reconsecrated in 1999.

Architectural history and tradition

The dates place the buildings in different periods: the Marian column dates from 1749, the Church of St. James from the late 18th century and the chapel from 1818. The church is also at the heart of Hody: Tužina celebrates this festival on the second Sunday in September to commemorate the consecration of the church. The architectural history can therefore be read not only in the buildings, but is also linked to a recurring local tradition.
