Temeš lies in the southern part of the Strážovská hornatina, in a deep, short, left-hand valley of the Belanka stream. For hikers, the area offers routes of different lengths: one marked trail connects Temeš with Liešťany, another leads from Temešské sedlo to Temešská skala, and there is also a hiking route to Bojnice.
Valley, forest and Temešská skala
The Temešská skala protected area lies within the cadastral territories of Temeš and Čavoj and has the fifth level of protection. The European protected area also includes land above the municipality of Čavoj. The rare, European-protected long-leaved ragwort, subspecies Tephroseris longifolia subsp. moravica, is a key feature there. There are only a few known sites for this plant in Slovakia; the relevant areas are to be preserved or kept clear of woody growth. Land-use statistics also give a more precise picture of the surroundings: non-agricultural land makes up 68 percent of the municipality’s area; 62 percent of this category is forest.
Hiking trails and cycling connections
Marked hiking trail 8403 connects Temeš and Liešťany over 11.7 kilometres. The also-marked trail 8403V is considerably shorter, at 0.2 kilometres, and runs between Temešské sedlo and Temešská skala. The two routes therefore differ in both length and destination. Another hiking route through the Strážovské vrchy starts in Temeš, passes through Temešská skala, Malá Magura and Magura, and ends in Bojnice. The Temeš–Malá Magura–Bojnice route has a total elevation difference of 822 metres; this figure complements the named waypoints with a specific value for planning the hike.
Cyclists will also find named connections here: the Bojnický cyklookruh runs from Čavoj through Temeš and on to Nevidzany. The municipality’s 2021 annual report also mentions cycling routes that pass through Temeš. Check their local routes before your trip.
Chapel and folk traditions
The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes was built in 1926 in a retarded Late Classicist style. It is a single-nave building with a rectangular floor plan and a projecting tower. Here, “retarded” refers to a later manifestation of the style. The chapel can be clearly characterised by its year of construction and floor plan, without conflating it with the area’s natural and hiking attractions.
The Košarinka folk group was founded in 1999. Its repertoire includes folk games, customs, songs and dances. The Day of Folk Traditions beneath Temešská skala brought together residents, people originally from Temeš and people from other municipalities. The municipality’s 2021 annual report names August as the annual event month; check the date for your chosen year before travelling. At one edition, culinary products made by women from Temeš and hunters were offered throughout the day. The products on offer may vary from one edition to another.
