Lehota pod Vtáčnikom lies at the western foot of the Vtáčnik Mountains. Visitors choosing a destination for its landscape and local history will find several clearly defined themes here: protected natural areas, distinctive volcanic formations, traces of coal mining and historical landmarks. The natural areas are located in different parts of the municipality’s cadastral area; their precise locations are part of what makes each one distinctive.
Natural Environment and Protected Areas
The Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area extends into the cadastral area of Lehota pod Vtáčnikom. There, the forests of the Vtáčnik Mountains form an important gene pool site for flora and fauna. The Vtáčnik National Nature Reserve also extends into the municipality, specifically into its southern part. These details paint a picture of the natural region without reducing its protected areas to a single point.
A small part of the Sivý kameň Natural Monument reaches into the southwestern part of the cadastral area, particularly into the Malá Lehota district. The protected area includes a visually distinctive rocky formation in a volcanic mountain range, as well as protected plants. The remains of a medieval castle dating from the second half of the 13th century are also located there. This is a place where geological features and a historic building come together.
Volcanic Formations of the Vtáčnik Mountains
The Biely kameň Nature Reserve is located in the forested eastern part of the municipality’s cadastral area. It protects a distinctive rocky peak with visible lava flow structures and rare rhyolite formations within the volcanic complexes of the Vtáčnik Mountains. Sivý kameň and Biely kameň thus offer different geological highlights: the rocky formation and castle ruins define the former, while lava flow structures and rhyolite are the focus of the latter. Those interested in geology can consider these features as separate themes of the region.
Traces of Local History
The “Baňa Nováky” educational trail (1733469) passes through the cadastral area of Lehota pod Vtáčnikom. It presents the 70-year history of coal mining in the area around Nováky and the Baňa Nováky mine. This is a different theme from the natural areas: here, the focus is on mining history. Archaeological finds also give the place a long historical perspective. Remains of mammoth bones were found near the Lazný stream, estimated to be approximately 90,000 to 50,000 years old.
More recent history includes the Vtáčnik partisan unit. It was formed in the mountains around the castle and Lehota and became part of the Upper Nitra Partisan Brigade. The Church of Sts. Cyril and Methodius offers another historical perspective: this modern, single-nave building was constructed in 1948. The main altar features an image of Saints Cyril and Methodius by E. Massányi, dating from 1950. The building and the altarpiece are only two years apart and together form a tangible chapter in local church history.
Activities and Practical Considerations
Rock climbing is also an activity associated with Lehota pod Vtáčnikom. Existing sports facilities on the grounds of the primary school also include a covered swimming pool. If you plan to go climbing or visit the pool, check access arrangements in advance. That way, you can take these activities into account when planning your trip without assuming that the facilities are open to visitors.
The cadastral area also has an 800-metre ski lift that is currently out of operation. If winter sports are important to your stay, check its status again before travelling in winter. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether you are particularly interested in nature and geology, mining and local history, or several of these themes. Lehota pod Vtáčnikom therefore offers a range of points of interest to help you decide what you would like your stay to focus on.
