Veľká Hradná brings together a protected stream landscape and local history that spans from the medieval Hradisko to ecclesiastical details from the 20th century. This offers a choice of different focuses for your stay: nature and cultural heritage. The municipality lies on the northern foothills of the loess-covered Nitrianska pahorkatina, near the Považský Inovec and along the upper reaches of the Hradniansky potok stream.

Svinica: Stream landscape and protected habitats

Svinica is a protected natural monument in the cadastral areas of Veľká Hradná and Trenčianske Jastrabie. The protected area is an uphill section of stream above the Svinica Reservoir. Stands of ash and alder trees remain on its banks; bird cherry is abundant there. Thus, the focus is on the bankside vegetation as well as the watercourse itself.

The aquatic communities are home to the protected noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) and the rare mayfly Nigrobaetis niger. The levels of protection are also part of the natural area's description: the nature monument is subject to the fourth level of protection, and its buffer zone to the third. If you include Svinica in your travel plans, take these designations into account.

Local history and cultural heritage

Kaštieľ Patrovec is a national cultural monument. A castle once stood in the Kostolnica part of the municipality. Another historical landmark is Hradisko in the cadastral area of Veľká Hradná: at the beginning of the 12th century, it was the political, administrative and sacred-religious centre of the Hradniansky Archdeaconry. The area's history therefore extends beyond individual buildings and includes the former significance of Hradisko.

The Roman Catholic church in Veľká Hradná was built in 1935. Its bells tell of different years of origin and the same craftsmanship: one bell in the church tower was cast by Pavol Ranko of Trenčín in 1919; it was transferred there from an earlier chapel. The same bell-founder made a second church bell in 1936. The Church of Panny Márie Lurdskej in Veľká Hradná belongs to the Dubodiel parish.

The local culture also includes straw-mat making as a local tradition and traditional dress. Historically, the dress of Veľká Hradná is classified as part of the West Slovak costume group associated with the former Nitra County. Craftsmanship, clothing and the church's architectural history each offer a different way to explore local culture.

Hiking trail and travel planning

A marked hiking trail passes through Patrovec. The Inovecký maratón is regularly held along this route. This gives you two different reasons to include Patrovec in your plans: a hike along the marked trail or taking part in an event. If you want to plan your trip around the marathon, check the event dates before setting your stay dates.

A suspected castle site is also associated with the surroundings of Veľká Hradná, although its location on a wooded hill has not been confirmed. A forest path leads from the edge of the village in the direction of Malá Hradná to a meadow and then towards the suspected site. The route description and the uncertainty about the exact location go hand in hand, so treat this as a possible historical trace rather than a confirmed site.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider what you want your stay to focus on: the protected stream landscape, the history of Hradisko and the cultural monuments, or the hiking trail through Patrovec. These highlights give Veľká Hradná a distinct character, without prescribing a fixed daily itinerary.
