Trenčín offers several distinct ways to explore the city: the stone castle and other historic buildings offer a glimpse into the city’s past, Lesopark Brezina has trails for walkers and cyclists, and a boat trip on the Váh lets you see Trenčín and the surrounding area from the water. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural history, a walk in the forest and a river trip as clearly distinct options.
Trenčín Castle and historical landmarks
The stone fortress of Trenčín Castle was built in the 11th century. At the castle, visitors can see exhibition rooms and permanent exhibitions of the Trenčianske múzeum v Trenčíne about the history of the castle and the entire region. Before your visit, it is worth checking the museum’s current information about its permanent exhibitions.
The Roman inscription on the castle rock is the most important authentic written evidence preserved in situ of the presence of Roman troops in this area in the 2nd century AD. It extends the historical perspective beyond the period when the castle was built and into Roman times.
The Neological Synagogue is an exceptional architectural work and tangible evidence of the history of the local Jewish community. Due to its heritage value, it was declared a national cultural monument in 1963.
Mestská veža and views over the city
Mestská veža was probably built at the beginning of the 15th century as part of the city fortifications. It has served as the southern entrance to Mierové námestie since the High Middle Ages. Its circular viewing platform offers views in every direction of historic buildings and nearby attractions, including Piaristický kostol and the well-known Jewish synagogue.
Trails in Lesopark Brezina
Lesopark Brezina covers 212.68 hectares and is located close to Trenčín city centre. The park has trails exclusively for pedestrians, trails exclusively for cyclists, and shared-use trails. When choosing a trail, it is worth distinguishing between these different types of use.
The Divotraily Trenčín in Lesopark Brezina are narrow forest trails for mountain bikes and offer various difficulty levels. For a different kind of forest experience, there is the “Vznik a vývoj lesa” educational trail: it is 1,500 metres long, has an elevation difference of 50 metres and features twelve information panels. Its name means “The Origin and Development of the Forest”.
This makes it possible to distinguish between two different types of outing: mountain-bike forest trails with varying difficulty levels, and an educational trail with a specified length, elevation difference and information panels.
A boat trip on the Váh
A boat trip on the Váh aboard the “Dominik” offers views of Trenčín and the surrounding area. The trip includes nautical activities, including instruction in tying various sailor’s knots.
The standard “Od elektrárne po stavidlá” round trip takes approximately one hour. This provides an approximate time frame for planning your day; check the route’s current availability before your trip.
