Trenčianska Teplá combines a distinctive setting with clearly identifiable traces of architecture, customs and rail transport. The municipality lies at the foothills of the Strážovské vrchy in the southeast of the Ilava Basin. Here the Teplička stream emerges from the mountains, flows through Trenčianska Teplá and then joins the Váh. This gives you more than one focus for planning your trip: you can explore local history or look into cycling connections and the TREŽ narrow-gauge railway.
Churches, bell towers and older traces
At Podhradište, visible rampart remains of a hillfort associated with the Púchov culture have been preserved on a plateau. The site can therefore be considered an archaeological trace of the area's history. St. Matthew's Church in Trenčianska Teplá offers another way to explore the past: it was built in 1733 on older foundations. Its main altar dates from the late 18th century and combines Baroque and Classicist forms. The construction date and the altar provide two distinct points in time to consider when viewing the church interior.
In Dobrá, the Roman Catholic Church of the Finding and Exaltation of the Holy Cross, dating from 1900, stands on the site of an older Baroque church. Dobrá's architectural heritage also includes a masonry Classicist bell tower from the late 18th century, topped with a pyramidal roof. It stands on a rise in the northeastern part of the municipality. The former church tower continues to serve as a bell tower; it houses a late Gothic bell dating from 1516. The tower has been described as well preserved. As its condition may change over time, check before visiting.
Príles also has a variety of historical traces. A bell tower has been preserved there, probably dating from the period of re-Catholicization; its bell is dated to 1660. Today, only a very small part of the former manor house remains. Of the chapel once located in the manor house, only walls with a Gothic window remain in a fragment of the building. These sparse remains are quite different from the church buildings: the focus here is on individual architectural elements and their former function.
Local customs and TREŽ
The Teplanská folk costume is recognizable by the colorful embroidery on its sleeves and apron. Geometric and floral patterns appear alongside animal motifs such as peacocks, roosters and birds. The TEPLANKA folklore ensemble resumed its regular rehearsals in spring 2022 and continues to take part in many of the cultural events in Trenčianska Teplá. Programs the ensemble presented based on local songs and customs included “Teplanská svadba,” “Drápanie peria” and “Dožinky.” Check individual performances separately for your travel dates.
Another special feature is TREŽ, an electrically operated narrow-gauge railway between the Trenčianska Teplá railway junction and the spa town of Trenčianske Teplice. In addition to irregular tourist passenger services, TREŽ offers talks and cultural events. If a ride is important to your travel plans, check the dates in advance: tourist services do not run regularly.
Choose cycling routes by course and character
The blue cycling route 2303 starts in Trenčianska Teplá's market square. It is 11.3 kilometers long, designated as an easy recreational cycling route for road traffic, and runs on asphalt or a paved surface. Another regional connection, Trenčianska Teplá–Bolešov, links the municipality with the Váh Cycling Route. The green cycling route from Trenčianske Teplice follows the Teplička River to the center of Trenčianska Teplá. After crossing the Teplička, the Čvirigovec nature trail follows the embankment. The stream is therefore a point of reference both in the landscape and along these routes. Before cycling, it is advisable to check the current route, markings and surface conditions.
When choosing a hotel in Trenčianska Teplá, consider what you want to focus on during your trip: architectural and local history, local customs, or the rail and cycling connections described here.
