Svinná offers several clearly distinct points of interest: early forms of its name and local history, a church with its own history of construction and furnishings, the Fašiangy festivities, and the area’s connections to water. You can focus on cultural history or local traditions, while also distinguishing the location on the Svinnica stream from nearby Svinica Reservoir. Sport fishing and water sports are possible at the reservoir.
The history in three time markers
The origins of Svinná are dated to the years 1171 to 1180. The existence of the settlement in 1208 is assumed indirectly: the village is named “Suina” in a boundary description of Dobrašov. The first direct written mention dates from 1439, using the form “Possessio seu villa ZWYNNA.” These dates represent different historical reference points: a dating of the origins, an indirect mention, and the first direct written record. So, when placing the chronology in context, 1439 is not the date of the settlement’s origins but the year of its first direct written mention.
Church and religious art
The church in Svinná was built in the Art Nouveau style with Neo-Gothic elements. It was consecrated by Bishop Dr. Karol Kmeťko on 11 November 1923. Its architectural style and consecration provide two distinct insights into the church’s history: its architectural classification and a precisely dated event. At the side altar of the Holy Sepulchre is a Pietà statue from the mid-17th century, protected by the heritage preservation office. It dates from well before the 1923 consecration and adds an older work of art to the information about the church.
The bell in the small tower of the chapel in Malá Neporadzka is called “sv. Mária.” It was cast in 1919 at Pavel Ranko’s workshop in Trenčín. These religious details highlight different aspects: the church in Svinná is presented through its architectural style, consecration and Pietà, while the chapel is described through the bell’s name, casting year and workshop. Those interested in religious history can thus explore different perspectives on architecture, furnishings and bell history.
Fašiangy: procession and ceremony
The Fašiangy in Svinná last two days. On Saturday, a procession of carnival masks makes its way through the municipality; on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the “pochovávanie basy” ceremony takes place. The two events differ both in the day of the week and in their form. Local firefighters have been involved in organizing the Fašiangy practically since their founding in 1884. The procession covers approximately 11 kilometers, equivalent to the combined length of all the municipality’s streets. If you are planning a trip around the Fašiangy, check the dates of the upcoming celebration in advance.
Stream, reservoir and railway
Svinná lies on the upper course of the Svinnica stream. Nearby Svinica Reservoir is a separate water destination, where sport fishing and water sports are possible. The stream describes the village’s location, while the activities mentioned take place at the reservoir. For travel, Svinná has a railway station on the Trenčín–Chynorany line. Check current train connections separately if you are planning to travel by rail.
