Omšenie is a mountain municipality in the southwest of the Strážovské vrchy; the Teplička flows through the village. The Omšenská Baba Nature Reserve lies above Omšenie. If you are looking for accommodation in Omšenie, you can plan your stay around different interests: hiking, protected nature, local history and leisure activities each offer a different focus.
Landscape and nature at Omšenská Baba
Omšenská Baba is a distinctive carbonate rock formation on the foothills of the Strážovské vrchy. The nature reserve encompasses rock, forest and wetland communities. Rare plants grow in the rocky habitats, including Pulsatilla subsalavica, Dianthus praecox subsp. praecox and Primula auricula. Those interested in botany will find three specifically named species here that offer a particular connection to the landscape.
Hiking around Omšenie
A blue-marked route to Baske starts right in Omšenie; the ascent takes 2.5 to 3 hours. Check the trail markings locally before setting out. The starting point for an excursion to Omšenská Baba is the small car park by the cemetery in Omšenie. The trip takes about 2.5 hours in total, including rest breaks; also check local trail conditions before departure.
The two time estimates refer to different things: the duration given for Baske is for the ascent, while the duration for the excursion to Omšenská Baba is the total time, including breaks. This helps with planning without treating the two outings as the same route. Another trail, the Lesnícky náučný chodník, starts at the bridge by the Kamenický Stream reservoir in the Baračka district. Signage and conditions on this trail may change.
A mountain hut is located below the summit of Baske. Access depends on whether the hut warden is present. A winter hiking meet-up is held on Baske every year; check the date for the current year before your trip.
Leisure activities and local events
Fishing is possible at the Omšenská reservoir, including for catfish, tench, carp and pike. Check the current local access rules in advance. The Žihľavník riding club in Omšenie offers carriage and sleigh rides, riding lessons in the indoor arena, Western riding and guided horse leading. Ask about current booking arrangements in advance.
The riding club holds a Western Day once a year. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the date before travelling. The Omšenské hodové slávnosti is a local celebration featuring music, entertainment and socialising. Check the date and programme for this celebration before your trip.
Churches, memorial sites and local traditions
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Omšenie dates from the first half of the 13th century and has a Romanesque tower. It has a rectangular floor plan with a polygonal end and is listed under ÚZPF number 1291/1. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary stands outside Omšenie, in the direction of Trenčianske Teplice, and dates from 1794. It houses a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary. The two religious buildings therefore represent different periods: the medieval Romanesque church and the late-18th-century chapel.
Daniel Krman, a Slovak writer and cultural figure, was born in Omšenie on 28 August 1663. A plaque in the village commemorates him. At the end of the Kamenická Valley stands the monument to American airmen. It commemorates the downing of an American bomber in 1944, in which Roland W. Morin lost his life.
The Omšenský kroj, or traditional costume, is also part of local cultural history. The costume is associated with the area's mountain farming and pastoral character and continues to be maintained as a local tradition in Omšenie.
