Manínska tiesňava and the hiking trails around Záskalie give the choice of location a clear focus: here, marked routes can be combined with an impressive karst landscape. There are also local natural features and a history that dates back to the 14th century. The route that interests you can therefore be a good starting point for planning your trip.
Gorges, rocks and protected species
Manínska tiesňava is a national nature reserve that draws travellers to Záskalie for its natural rock formations. The narrow valley follows the Manínsky potok and is bordered by rock walls up to 400 metres high. The scale of the rock walls defines the character of the gorge; a nature trail also runs through it.
Nearby lies Kostolecká tiesňava, which is about 500 metres long. The Manínsky potok has cut through the Drieňovka limestone rock there, forming the rocky gorge. The largest rock overhang in Slovakia is a distinctive natural feature. Those interested in landforms will find a different specific focus here from the high rock walls of Manínska tiesňava.
Local wildlife and plant life are also part of the area’s natural character: the Slovak pasqueflower and the Apollo butterfly are among the rare and strictly protected species in the surroundings of Záskalie. These natural features add a smaller-scale perspective to the rocky landscape—from the gorges and their walls to protected plants and animals.

These are different destinations: Route 5585 ends at Pod Veľkým Manínom, while the forest trail leads to the cave.
