The distinctive rocky ridge of the Klapy Nature Reserve gives Udiča a striking natural feature: here, a rocky landscape meets heat-loving vegetation. Klapov peak reaches an elevation of 653 metres. On the southeastern side of the rock is the small Cigánka fissure cave, another feature of this landscape.
Rocky landscape and natural history
The nature reserve covers around 6.2 hectares within Udiča’s cadastral area and is subject to the fifth level of protection. The “Náučný chodník Klapy” educational trail focuses on historical, archaeological and natural history topics. This brings the history of the area into view alongside its terrain.
Udiča’s geographical connections extend beyond Klapy: the southern edge of the municipality borders the Nosice Reservoir, and Udiča forms the gateway to the Marikovská Valley. These details locate the village in different ways—through its connection to the reservoir on its southern edge and its role as a gateway to the valley.
Two cycling routes, different levels of difficulty
The green cycling route “5312 – Jasenica – Udiča” starts in the centre of Udiča. It is classified as an easy recreational MTB route for all age groups. The “2307 – Udiča – Podvažie” cycling route has a different profile: it is a challenging 45-kilometre MTB route with sections on asphalt and paved paths. Its starting point in Udiča is at a junction with the Vážska cyklomagistrála.
The differing levels of difficulty are especially useful when choosing: an easy recreational MTB route for all age groups, or a route classified as challenging with a stated length of 45 kilometres. Route details may be updated; check the latest information from the relevant authority before setting out.
Church and older cultural traces
The present-day Church of Saint Matthew in Udiča was built in 1783 after the previous church had fallen into disrepair. It was solemnly consecrated on 22 June 1788, also in honour of Saint Matthew. The year of construction and the year of consecration mark two separate events. The church is also listed as number 779/0 in the Central List of Monuments of the Slovak Republic.
The historical connection with former Veľká Udiča is also part of the cultural background: it was formerly affiliated with the Udiča parish as a branch congregation. Potsherds from the Migration Period were found on Klape Hill in the area of former Veľká Udiča. A sandstone mould used to cast bronze spirals was also discovered there. These finds point to archaeological traces in the area and should not be confused with the church’s later construction history.
A further perspective on local folk culture is provided by a piece of glove-making from Veľká Udiča, woven on a wooden form. It is listed in the Slovak Encyclopaedia of Traditional Folk Culture. Along with the finds on Klape Hill and the history of the church, it offers different points of interest: archaeological traces, a specific historic building and an example of traditional textile craftsmanship.
