In Horná Mariková, cultural history and trails through the Javorníky sit side by side: in the village of Modlatín, an open-air museum and a church tell the story of the valley’s architectural history; on Orgoňova Kyčera, a lookout tower and hiking trails offer more to explore. Short cycling routes, fishing and winter activities are also among the options. You can plan your stay around your interests, whether you are especially interested in regional architectural styles, a hike or a specific route.

Wooden Buildings and Local History

The open-air museum in Modlatín showcases traditional life in the Mariková Valley. The exhibition is housed in a wooden building made up of three parts. It is free to visit by arrangement with the relevant employee of the municipal office. A guided tour with an ethnologist from the local history museum in Považská Bystrica can be arranged by appointment. Arrange your visit to the exhibition in advance; a guided tour also requires an appointment.

Also in Modlatín is the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. Its original structure dates back to 1765. In 1925–1926, the church was expanded with a new section of the nave and a side annex. Another wooden church is located in Ráztoka; it was built in 1948–1949. Original log houses have also been preserved in the municipality’s settlements, and are gradually being converted into holiday cottages and houses.

Local cultural life also has a folkloric connection: the Žrnovanka ensemble is among the well-known cultural groups of Horná Mariková. The Marikovské folklórne slávnosti (Mariková Folklore Festival) has been held in Horná Mariková since 1991; dates and programmes vary. So if you want to plan your trip around a performance or festival, check the relevant dates.

Views and Hiking Trails

The viewing platform on Orgoňova Kyčera stands seven metres above the ground. From the lookout tower, you can see, among other places, Manínska tiesňava, Súľovské skaly, Žilina and as far as the Low Tatras. Orgoňova Kyčera is also on a blue-marked hiking trail that leads from the main ridge of the Javorníky via Malý Javorník towards Považská Bystrica.

A tourism information source from 2022 lists two routes from the village centre to Orgoňova Kyčera: one directly from the renovated “Rezort Mravec” hotel, and another through the Modlatín Valley and the settlement of Máčkovci. The municipality’s cadastral area also includes the Javorníky–Družba educational hiking trail, which focuses on nature and history. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Comparing Two Short Cycling Routes

Cycling route 8316 from Horná Mariková to Máčkovci is 1.8 kilometres long, easy, and designed for recreational mountain biking. It runs along asphalt and paved paths. It starts near the senior citizens’ home, at a junction with blue cycling route 2307.

The Horná Mariková–Bahno route is also 1.8 kilometres long and designated as an easy, paved recreational cycling route. It starts in Horná Mariková at a junction with blue cycling route 2307. Although they are the same length, the routes differ mainly in their intended use and surface: route 8316 is designated for recreational mountain biking, while the Bahno route is paved throughout. Before setting out, check current route information, signage and trail conditions.

Fishing and Winter Activities

The Rybník Horná Mariková pond is available for fishing and is stocked with trout, carp and grass carp. As fishing conditions and rules may change, check the current regulations before fishing.

For winter, the region lists the SKI Ráztoka ski area, with three lifts measuring 1,000, 720 and 250 metres in length. Check whether the facilities are operating during the season. Ski mountaineering is also possible on the Čertov–Horná Mariková–Portáš route; winter conditions vary.
